Ravn looks really tired.

"I was borne, raised and trained a counsellor. Today, I have counselled of what should be done - and I have even said it twice and slowly. Have you listened?"

He stands between Thorgunn and Callum, knowing he has two agreeing partners there - at least in the matter of closing the tactical debate and get on with killing dogheads.

"Vanir, you suggest to go in alone and free the thralls. Now, let us for a moment forget that this was the very action we discarded when Thorgunn told us earlier, unopposed at the time, that the thralls were too weak and mellow to offer us any aid. I am sure you mean well and your courage I do not doubt - but are not your talents used just better at Rolf's side with the bow and arrow without risking that the dogheads become wary of the noose before we have placed it around their necks?"

The look in his eye makes it perfectly clear that it was only a rhetorical question. He continues:

"Stay with the Constable's party, this is my counsel and not without reason - your stealthy skills and keen senses will be of much use to escape the moatside monster's attention, and of no use there if you ventured in ahead. And if you do so anyway when the moat passage is behind you then at least wait until the parcel has been delivered lest you risk blowing our disguise as well as drawing the dogheads' attention to you - and there wil be nothing we can do for you other than to leap into the attack from a less vantageous position than required and die unvictorious for your folly or just sit and watch as you get butchered. And, personally, I am as unamused as ever by arguments over straying Vanirs' burial rites - but that is another, older story."

The Runecaster shakes his head and looks at Rolf.

"Now, I am weary of this endless debate and I fear the dogheads will die of old age before we get to thrusting steel through their skulls, and that would be an unbearable crime of neglect. Meeleek Blueman, will you cast your powers of the unseen on brave Thorgunn now, please?" ===========================================================

Elsbeth starts to speak, then (amazingly) holds her tongue.  There is little to be served by arguing with Ravn, she knows well.

"Our Counseler has spoken," she remarks, a bit sarcastically.  She looks to Rolf.  "If you are in agreement with his recommendations, then I am suggestin' that we be off.  I can find the most hidden and quiet way if ye be followin' me and Laddie." ===========================================================

Ravn, seeing Elsbeth's face almost contort with half a breath of argument and then change into one he loves better - namely that look of cool self-restraint and aloofness which followed him in his dreams and recollections on his latest visit home. Instead of lighting his fury at her respectless tone, he sends her an approving (or was that thankful, even?) nod and a telling smile.

We know each other better by the passing of each day, fair Elsbeth... And you must by now have found that there is often more wisdom of WHAT I say than of HOW and of WHEN I say it. Or is there really, druidess? Maybe you can even see the wisdom of WHY...?

These thoughts rush through the Runecaster's mind, words that he would not dare to speak openly to her - not in this company of the trivial and worldly, anyway - and he suddenly becomes aware that his thoughts may be showing on his face. Almost blushing, he resorts to reciting some old verse of the Havamál instead, old habit and practise for a runic wielder:

...of sixteen:
If you would truly gain
the heart of the fair
fairly shall you promise
and fairly promise keep...

His eyebrow rises almost to the hairline at his own inner dialogue.

Now why did THAT one spring to mind?

Distracted and distraught, he shakes his head (spooking the unsuspecting Uddhugg perched, half aslepp, on his shoulder) and turns his attention to the Blueman mage should he wish to continue, also, with the matter at hand. ===========================================================

Her comments made, Elsbeth turns her attentions inward, readying herself for the task of reaching out to the woods, to the spirits within.  Haunted or not, her heart sings at the thought of finding the wildness instead of carrying a war to the evil creatures at its edges...

If only Ravn didn't always have a long speech on his gods! she thinks to herself.  Everytime he spoke of his gods and the rites of battle, it was like a thorn in her heart.  She shakes her head.  As if a woman of the old religion could ever find herself with a man of the new.

Now where did that come from?  Elsbeth glances up in time to see Ravn's eyes upon her and finds herself blushing.  Oh, why couldn't she simply be mad at him? After all, none of them might come back alive from this foolish adventure. And that thought makes the young woman sad indeed.

Oh, I wish I was not so confused about him!  It would be so much easier if she simply hated him instead of... ===========================================================

Meeleek watches the debate is silence, much the way he did in ALL the former debates. He stands stoic, his hands folded in the shrouds of his aba, listening to everyone's words, hearing their words and intentions alike.
Depp in concentration, the young Midani is a bit startled as Ravn addresses him directly, especially in a request for acknowledgment as the true leader of the group.
Meeleek looks the Runecaster straight in the eyes, and then turns to Rolf, waiting. ===========================================================

"Elsbeth, I suspect that the secret of the place is in that copse and that with it's help, we'll free the slaves.  Would you agree?"  He pauses, then continues, "I feel that getting Elsbeth into the copse is our main focus.  Elsbeth, do you think you can enter safely or do you require Meeleek's enchantment?"

He pauses, then looks to Edgar, "Your job, my friend, is to act as go between with us and Elsbeth.  If you stay on the far side, over the copse, you should be safe enough from the dogheads."

"The rest of us will prepare a frontal assault.  When Elsbeth is ready, or if she's spied out before she reaches the copse, we'll be attacking.  Peter, you hold back.  Should we fail, it's up to you to reach Earl Richard and let him know of our failure."

"Now, Meeleek, this wall of mist and spray of colors you mention, tell me of them.  How far you can cast them, how long they'll last, if you can shift them about, things of that nature.  It seems to me that a spray of color behind the dogheads will draw their attention, allowing us to fall upon them from behind.  And, when Elsbeth draws forth the power of the place, a wall of mist might put fear upon our enemy.  One word though, when your magicks are depleted, leave and let us cover your escape.  Return and join Peter on his sojourn to Earl Richards court." ===========================================================

Edgar begins to raise further objections to Ravn's plan, then pauses.  "It is your neck most at risk," the raven admits, "but I think you know that ... very well, it shall be as you say.  And may ..." again a pause "... may the gods watch over you.  Both old and new.  I am ready."

Like the rest, Edgar then turns to Rolf, awaiting his decision, and nods his head gravely as that decision is pronounced.

"Your job, my friend, is to act as go between with us and Elsbeth.  If you stay on the far side, over the copse, you should be safe enough from the dogheads."

Safe, perhaps, for it is unlikely that whatever might dwell in the haunted wood would see a lone bird as a threat ... but from there he will be able to keep an watchful eye on the Druidess too, lest her route proves the more perilous.

"Once I have delivered my parcel, I shall wing my way to you there ... by a circular route, so as not to draw the attention of our foes," Edgar advises Rolf. ===========================================================

"Meeleek BLueman, you said you could shroud but one of us in invisibility and would then have to retreat into solitude and contemplation before you could cast another such trollery. Tell me, if you will, how long would this magical unseenness last? And how long before you would be ready to repeat your marvelous feat?"

He turns to Rolf, explaining.

Rolf nods at Ravn, "A good thought." he says, then turns to Elsbeth.  "Is it wise to take the wolf with you?  He will surely attract the attentions of the dogheads.  Perhaps he should remain and join us in our direct fight."

Then he looks to Meeleek, to wait upon his answer to Ravn as to how long it'll take to renew his magicks.

OOC:  Here's the battle plan as I see it.  We invisible Elsbeth, get her into the copse.  Edgar then flies in to make sure everything is kosher.  Then, when Meeleek can cast again, he'll cast invisibility on Thorgunn to bring forth the "gift".  The rest of us (except Peter) will prepare to rush to battle.  Once things have gotten involved, Thorgunn (who should still be invisible) will wait and attack the leader if he can.  As a backup, Rolf will have his bow at the ready to attack the leader also.  If we need a distraction, Meeleek will cast his Color Spray.  If we really get pasted, then Meeleek will cast his other spell to give us cover. ===========================================================

Blushing slightly, but remaining serious, Meeleek explains.
"The invisibility illusion shall remain until one breaks it- in attacking directly or otherwise drawing attention to her place." Turning to Rolf, he continues: "In order to cast this spell again I shall require two hours of study, more or less. The same time will be required if I am to conjure the wall of gloom. This wall shall be ten feet high and sixty across and will cause any passing it to despair. It will dissipate in a few minutes, though.
"The color spray is smaller- only twenty feet long and the same across. It is a marvelous spray of colors which may blind or stun enemies on close quarters, but from afar may merely create a wonderful distraction." Catching himself getting enthusiastic, Meeleek calms himself, bows deeply, and finishes: "For you to use as you wish, Rolf Liefson." ===========================================================

"Yes, we've waited long enough.  Meeleek, cast your magicks of unseeing upon Elsbeth.  Elsbeth, once he's done, move down into the wood within.  Be careful, you're not there to do ought but get within the wood and awaken the Celtic spirits within.  Edgar, once you figure she's in the wood, fly in.  Be careful to only cross from the far side, over the ditch and the wood, do not fly over the dogheads."

He turns to the rest.  "Meeleek, once you've cast the spell, start working on replenishing it.  That will give Elsbeth plenty of time to get into the wood.  If anything goes wrong, we attack.  If things go smoothly, then Thorgunn will be made invisible, Edgar will come back to 'fly' the gift of Ravn forward.  Thorgunn will then make his way on into the camp to be ready to attack the leader.  The rest of us will make a frontal assault.  Remember your other spells should the need arise, Meeleek.  If we get into trouble, retreat to the wood, the dogheads will not follow us within.  We can then harry them with spell and arrow until we're ready to assualt them again.  And perhaps by them, we'll have stiffened a few of the backs of the slaves we've hopefully freed by then."

OOC:  I'm with Callum, I'd like to go ahead and get moving on this assault.  Rolf's been hesitant as he doesn't want to follow a course that will get his companions killed, but he's come to realize that if they don't move soon, the more bloodthirsty of the companions will attack without wit or reason. ===========================================================

She kneels down to her wolf, meeting the great beast's eyes.  She growls to him, responding when he growls back.  The wolf looks back at the group, then at Elsbeth, then gives a low bark.  He then moves over to Rolf and looks to the man expectantly.

"Laddie will be runnin' with ye now, Rolf.  Ye'll not be able to give him direction, but he'll look to ye as pack leader.  And I pray the Goddess is with ye."

OOC: Fair enough, Callum!  I'd expect nothing else :)  Just because Elsbeth is reluctant to fight doesn't mean glory can't come to those of you who wish it!  So I say, on with the show. ===========================================================

You watch not only the mules, but also the future, my friend ... as do I, for my own role in the coming storm is naught but a token, to assist in Ravn's charade, thence to bear messages ... but we will bear witness to the legend that our comrades will build this day, do they live or die, and their story we will pass on.  That can be the harder part ... to do nothing but watch.

Edgar turns his head as Rolf speaks, the Constable's words heralding the start of the gambit.  Though as Elsbeth vanishes, the raven takes wing in a hurry, muttering to himself, "A problem presents itself ... how am I to know where Elsbeth is, let alone when she reaches the wood ?!!"

"Elsbeth !  The raven caws as he flies away towards the camp, "I shall await you by the ditch ... be sure to stop for me there !!"

[Private to Elsbeth Marva Treveri: in the interests of speeding things up for our hasty comrades ... Edgar should hear your approach, as you come near the rear of the camp ... basically he won't be able to perch upon you, as you will have a bit of climbing to do, but he can fly to the fence and keep a lookout for approaching moat monsters and the like, and then once you climb over, signal him with a quiet word, and he will return to others.  If all goes according to plan, that is !! ;>] ===========================================================

As the discussion wears on and they seem no nearer towards venting their spleens upon the doghead camp, Thorgunn becomes more agitated. Impatiently he shifts his weight from one foot to the other, gripping the hafts of his axes until his knuckles turn white. The Norseman is thoroughly confused by his companions' desire to leave a dagger amidst their enemy. He does not raise a question, but merely allows a bemused look to cross his face before returning his thoughts to the coming battle.

Eventually Callum voices what Thorgunn is thinking; When do the heads roll? Thorgunn grunts loudly in approval, a fierce frown appearing upon his forehead. Fortunately, that seems to be the catalyst for action and he follows Ravn to begin the final preparations.

Puzzled, he looks about him, looking for the source of the sound and finding none. Then he spots the Blueman mage withdrawing, book in hand, and the Runecaster smiles.

That was swift, indeed, Blueman!, he thinks to himself, adding a smiling whisper: "A hero I must be, fair Elsbeth, and if I die today I shall die well - with your voice in my ear, your face in my eye, and your name on my lips...."

That said, he turns his attention to the parcelwrapping with notable joy and excitement.

Waiting for Edgar to return with word of Elsbeth's success, Ravn finds himself faced with two problems - disguising the spear and keeping the two anxious fighters waiting as time draws out.

"Thorgunn," he regards his fellow Norseman, "I think the only way to solve this little problem is to turn the spear invisble. To the unknowing, this would simply mean that you must carry it and hand it to me when we stand before the doghead king. However, this is not that simple, for it is a most sacred token of One-Eye and one from which I should never part lest I risk losing the Wanderer's favor. So only one possibility remains: That you be the parcel, I the unseen carrier and the spear with me." ===========================================================

A look of uncertainty crosses Thorgunn's face at the mere mention of him carrying the runecaster's staff. His furrowed brow relaxes somewhat though as Ravn concludes his adjustment to the plan.

"I would feel ill at ease" he says, "to have the merest touch from an artifact enchanted with The Wanderer's power. It is best you carry it".

Thorgunn claps the iron heads of the axes together in a sudden movement. "Come" he says, "Let us be away, The Thunderer awaits his entertainment!" ===========================================================

With a flurry of wingbeats (deliberatly so as not to overly alarm the more twitchy of his two-legged companions), Edgar returns, settling atop Rolf's shoulder, his voice containing a note of excitement as he speaks.

"It is done !  Elsbeth has entered the woods, unseen and unheard by our foe."

The excitement gives way to puzzlement as the raven espies Thorgunn preparing to be parcel-wrapped, rather than Ravn.  "The plan has changed already ?" Edgar inquires of the rune-caster, eyeing the pair.  "Can you lift him ?" ===========================================================

Ravn's face contorts with irritation at the beaky bird's ironic remarks.

"Odin's sons are no weaklings, fowl - this raven may not fly but it will carry more than just a dagger and spearheaded speech!"

Then he looks about, searching for Meeleek.

"Now, where IS that Blueman? His incantation is due..." ===========================================================

As his growing excitement caused him to speak more hastily and less tacfully than he might otherwise have done, so does that excitement allow the runecaster's heated reply to wash over Edgar unanswered.

"We needs give Elsbeth some little time," the raven replies, as Ravn casts about for Meeleek, "though it would be best that we not be overlong lest matters go awry ..." ===========================================================

Ravn, reading the others' faces like an open book with almost worrying accuracy, gently shoves Uddhugg's poking beak out of his ear with an annoyed grimace, then offers his opinion.

"As close as possible without detection would be preferable lest my arm be weakened by the burden before the bloodsea's journey. Yet I see no reason not to explore the powers and limitations of your foreign powers as we go, Meeleek Blueman! Also, we should all bear the parcel with Thorgunn inside there together, for if we - well, you lot - are spotted on the way you can just leave it sitting there and make as if you swing the hare's sword and take flight while Thorgunn and I proceed with our share of the plan. And you can proceed with yours."

The Runecaster nods respectfully at the Midani mage.

A momentary thought comes to the raven, but he does not give it voice nor much mind.  No doubt Ravn has already allowed for the possibility that the talking bird may well be recognised for the one who attempted to steal the shaman's rods during the earlier ambush - in fact, the priest of Odin is no doubt counting upon that fact.  And to mention the matter would merely draw another acerbic comment ... ===========================================================

Rolf leads the others back a bit and around a ways, taking pains to keep everyone quiet and unseen.  Once situated, Rolf sets his bow and notches an arrow, awaiting Ravn's performance as the unseen bearer of the gift of death to the dogheads, at least that's what Rolf prays for.  "Stand ready." he orders quietly. ===========================================================

Ravn's inward recital ends minutes after Rolf and the others have disappeared beyond the jagged contours of the hilly and sparsely vegetated terrain, and his voice speaks gently.

"Now, then, fowl Edgar - let us bring this gift, a token of our appreciation, to the dogheads, shall we?"

That being said, he balances the heavy parcel on his strong back, waits for Edgar to assume his wing-flapping perch and then starts walking downhill toward the encampment gate.

He keeps a careful eye out for any dogheads and their reactions to the seemingly flying, hovering object on his shoulders, ready to abort the plan at this extremely critical point: If he and Thorgunn are caught out in the open like this the cunning plan couldvery well turn into bloody massacre with themselves as the subjected victims.

"Hear me, Loki! Blind them with awe, Trickster of Tricksters, and awaken in them their trollish curiosity - and lead us to their king!", he whispers as he approaches the palissade.... ===========================================================

"And may the Great Queen turn her face to sap the courage of our foes," responds Edgar, feeling the need to assert some of the authority of the old gods, as the Runecaster invokes the new.

But then the time for talk is past, as the ruse is chanced ...

Pounding his wings in great beats that have naught to do with the mechanics of flight, and everything to do with putting on a good show for those within the fort, the raven 'struggles' with the weight of the parcel, 'bearing' it slowly onwards, eyes fixed on the lone guard.

"We are spotted," Edgar speaks in a low tone, for Thorgunn's benefit, before raising his voice (that the dogheads learn sooner of this talking raven before they are tempted to put an arrow in him to take the parcel by force).

What, in Loke's name, possessed you to mentioned the Earl? You could have said the Gods of Dogheadkin, Loke himself, the Yuletomte or the bloody DWARVES, for Tyr's sake! But oh no, you just HAD to mention the Earl, didn't you, you feathery fool!"

Ravn's invisible head turns toward the tree cluster.

"But not all hope is lost - this IS still but a parcel and not the target they will expect when they man the battlements - the ruse will still hold if only the Constable doesn't.."

Evidently, the Runecaster remains, even when he sees two arrows leap from the shady cover of the trees and sail across the palissade - <i>...with Odin's help, they won't notice...
, but his hopes crumble to dust when he hears an unearthly howl, a fiendish roar to which the moatside monster's gutturations pale by comparison, rising from the forest at the far side of the palissade.

"Callum...", he sighs. "Begone, fowl, and tell Rolf to strike with all his force from his side whilst we seek out the doghead king from ours - it is too late to retreat."

Then, his eyes focused on the palissade, he reaches inside the parcel, muttering a pardon at poking Thorgunn in the eye and smiling when his keen fingers feel the cold steel of the spearhead and trace the runic indentations on it. Quickly, he whispers a plea to the foremost of the Aesir.

"Odin, grant me now your boon! Frey, enrich me now with power! Thor, shield this parcel from the dogheads' attention that we may wander among them unscathed!"

Soon, the power rushes through his very being, causing him o shiver with delightful awe.

"Stay put, Thorgunn - the others' impatience may prove a blessing in the disguise of a faithless and gutless man's folly. By Mimer's beard, do I have my work cut out for me!" he whispers to the emparcelled fighter, adding with ill-disguised contempt, "Now let's see what those dogheads have to say for themselves..."

OOC: Cast Sanctuary on parcel. Next round, he will pick up the parcel again and start moving toward the palissade, provided the dogheads haven't peppered us yet, and see if Callum's diversion provides a window of opportunity still. ===========================================================

"Have at them."  Rolf's command seems suddenly loud when they've tried so long to be quiet, but it's really just a normal tone of voice, but with the iron of command.

He let's fly two more arrows, but with the confusion in the camp and the inability of the dogheads to stand still, his arrows miss their marks.

OOC:  Rolled a 6 and a 5.  I'm beginning to think that Rolf couldn't hit his own damn foot if it's dependant on the stupid dice roller. ===========================================================

Rolf's arrows fly over the palisade, swiftly followed by kerims, and are lost to the archers view ....  However - Ravn stuggling to lift the dead weight of thorgunn again see then fly wide of their mark.  The  arrows though seem to  have a sobering effect on the dogheads, and  suddenly they are arming them selves much more effectively, and one or  two  even  make  feints towrds the  strange floating parcel ...

Non combatants, some of the women and  children are sheperded towards the huts, while the  slaves (or  so you assume the non dogheads to be)  quickly scurry  from underfoot, heading to  the edges of the pallisade and finding something to  hide behind.

Ravn starts his walk towards the gate again, but  catches a quick glimse of a long green hand, complete  with sharp talons, curl over the edge of the bridge -  as if its  ready to  haul its  owner up level ....

Callum, on his  charge, sees it  as well  [Private to Callum mac Aonghas: and also sees the long green arm and thin, long nosed face, of  some  large humanoid -  preparing to follow it]  From under the bridge comes the gutteral grunting again, almost seeming like a question in its cadence.

Edgar flies -  circling well back from the  group before heading back towards Rolf ....
[Private to Edgar: There is  certainly  some bodies back there, and moving fast -  BUT  your poor  eyesight  doesn't identify them  - however  you  do know they are large, and you  spot the glint of light on metal -  perhaps a weapon ...] ===========================================================

Seeing the ill-boding green hand only makes Ravn the more determined to cross the bridge with all haste. Panting, he strides as fast as his legs will bear him and the cumbersome Thorgunn parcel, hoping to reach the other side before the green hand's owner heaves itself up onto the bridge. ===========================================================

Edgar weaves through the trees from behind the main group, attempting subterfuge, but haste and the proximity of so many wayward arrows elicit more than a few caws of alarm as he crashes through the branches. [Private to GM: tried Move Silently - more for colour than anything else, but ...]

At length, the raven alights on a branch near Rolf, joining with the Constable in regarding the invisible parcel's flight to the bridge, and no doubt making the same wager as to whether Callum will arrive on the scene before the duo manage to clear the bridge, green hands from below not withstanding ...

"The runecaster suggests you attack in force," Edgar reports, somewhat acerbically, though from his worried glance towards the bridge and the slowly progresing parcel, it is obvious that he is concerned for Ravn and his charge ... if only that he wishes the pleasure of continued remonstrations with the priest of Odin.

"However, I should inform you that another group approaches from the rear ... I could not tell if they were man or beast, but they bear arms.  It is too much to hope that they are friendly."

Before Rolf can digest the news, the raven presses. "Should I see to Elsbeth and warn her of what has ... is happening ?  What instructions should I pass on to her ?"  Worry for the druidess' safety tinges his voice. ===========================================================

With his bow still in his hand and arrow nocked Kerim follows Rolf with another volley, himself not sure where Ravn & co are due to the mild chaos of the situation.  Alas he is also unaware that volleys of arrows into the compound is having the opposite effect on the dogheads than required, in that is forcing them to act coherently.

A smile on his face shows that his first shot goes somewhere where he was expecting (18), but a sharp curse and an accusing look at his bow, and then his arrows shows he is less than pleased with his second shot (5).

GM, unmodified rolls, dex +2 and whatever negatives for distance, cover, vision etc.

Kerim, having phsyched himself up on the excitement of actually going to battle after so much discussion deflates like a sail becalmed as the Raven's brings news of a force behind them.

It is us indeed that have invited folly to be our ally in underestimating the dogheads talent for ambush.  Such it seems as they have allowed us to think we were silent, when the while they knew. Intones Kerim in very negative tones.

There are few options indeed for us to pursue.  Flee to save those here and maybe escape being hunted down, with those yonder lost for sure.  Or...hope we have numbers and the blessing of our gods to take whatever force the dogheads left in camp as bait for us and defend in the pallisade.

As can be readily determined Kerim has already made up his mind on the lay of the situation, always secretly having been suspicious as to why their previous encounter with the dogheads hadn't sparked a wider hunt.  The use of dogs would surely have tracked them down by now.  Though of course in the heat of the situation he hasn't questioned why they couldn't have as easily disposed of them in camp last night, whilst they argued. ===========================================================

Quickly, to Edgar, "Aye, fly to Elsbeth and tell her to do what she can to help, but she's not to risk herself."

Then, Rolf stands again and draws bead, "Uller, guide my arrows."  He grimaces as one arrow flys wide and sticks harmlessly in the stockade fence.  The second marks one of the dogheads, but does little more than bloody it's clothes.

Seeing how little good the bow is doing, Rolf draws his sword and rushes forward.  "To the attack!" he calls to the others.

Within his cramped surroundings, Thorgunn is becoming more and more impatient. He has heard arrows let loose and then a Celtic warcry. The Norseman fidgets within his prison and tightens his grip on his axe. The battle has started and he was locked in here, missing out on the chance for glory, or more probably, death in glorious battle. Thorgunn is finding it more and more difficult to contain his desire to leap from the 'parcel'. His increasingly agitated fidgeting must surely be felt by the heroic Ravn underneath, labouring with his weight. ===========================================================

If a raven could smile, Edgar's beak would be split in a wide grin ... but it would be a grin as of that which might line the face of a wolf, humourless, malign.

"The battle shall be glorious," the raven declares to the constable, as if tinged by some of the 'madness' that seemingly affects Ravn.  "May the Great Queen strike fear in the hearts of our foes !  Do fortail seaghdha !" To the brave, strength !

So saying, Edgar takes wing, circling away from his companions as he goes to seek out the Druidess ... [Private to GM: circle back to the fence at the rear of the Haunted Forest and watch/look/listen :>] ===========================================================

Thorgunn stirs inside his parcel, obviously restless, and that causes the parcel to move about and disturbing Ravn's balance - making him sway precariously from side to side, while the parcel seems to shake insecurely in his hands.

To those watching it seems as if the flying parcel - now without its bird shaped porter, just swings and hovers in the air for a moment rocking and jiggling about in the air.

Finally it all proves too much for the Norse rune caster - (or indeed the magic of the parcel- if you are one of the onlookers) and the parcel slowly topples to one side …

Inside the parcel, Thorgunn can feel his parcel start to tip to the right, and waits for Ravn to correct the carriage, but this time the tipping seems to go on for longer than normal … [Private to Ravn Ashengray: I  decided it  was time for a strength check -  you had been carrying for a while, stopped readjusted and then  the  'parcel'  got  resteless -  I rolled an  16  on the  diceroller  for  you -  so  ....]

!CRASH! Suddenly the parcel topples just that little bit to far and Ravn can’t correct … next moment it is in splinters and tatters on the ground, with a very surprised Thorgunn, laying amidst the detritus shaking his head [Private to Thorgunn Kylansson : Please take  2 points of  damage  from the unexpected  fall and  be  stunned  for a round or  two -  Not  unconcious -  just    head  not  clear, difficulty  thinking  etc  ..]

The  good  news  for Ravn and Thorgunn is that their  plan  did  work to  get them unmolested into the doghead camp, for they  are a few feet inside the gate.  The bad news, however, is that a tall green skinned humanoid  has climbed out onto  the bridge, and is  standing between them and the rest of the party.  The  next  bit of  good news is that Callum is  bearing  down on the  green thing …  The  bad news is that the green thing is  grinning and that  the others  are all some distance behind Callum …

Rolf and Kerim fire  arrows into the  compound, not really  knowing  how  well they  are  going  and then  draw swords  and, accompanied by Yuri,  follow the impetuous Callum  across the  clearing to the palisade gate.

Edgar, message delivered to Rolf, heads off to  the  woodlands  at the far  end of the stronghold, and eventually  settles onto the top of the palisade wall …[Private to Edgar: I  need to  know  how  you are entering the  wodland, if  indeed you are  entering at all  :)]

Face  grim, Peter, slides off  further into the bushes, ready to try and make a run back to earl Richard  should things  get  even  worse … ===========================================================

The teetering parcel inches it's way forward. Well more precisely, a bit to one side then forward then a bit to the other side and so on. The fidgeting Norseman within is finding it increasingly more difficult to steady himself. Then came the fatal step; the one that releases the rickety parcel and it's restless occupant into the grateful clutches of Madam Gravity. Thorgunn comes crashing down to the ground amidst a splintering of branch and other paraphenalia. "Thor's Hammer!" he cries in surprise just before he bangs his head against an ill-placed rock, "Ooof!" The sharp pain at the back of his head causes his eyes to explode in a profusion of tiny white starlets. Groggily he regains his feet. It seems to take an age and he staggers left then right, hand extended to try and steady himself. "Jotun-spawn!" he yells as his eyes try and make sense of the fuzzy shapes dancing within his sphere of vision, "Time to die!" His cry seems optimistic in the extreme as he fumbles for his axes, but eventually he manages to wrest them from their hiding place, tucked as they were, behind his belt. Thorgunn shakes his head vigorously to try and turn the blurred images into something more recognisable and attack-worthy.

Ravn rises from the beneath the shower of splinters and quickly assesses the situation.

Fortunately, they are inside the doghead compound - but Thorgunn seems to have forgotten their objective. The Runecaster is just about to grab the impetuous fighter by the collar when a thought flashes through his mind:

Be a fool if you must - but we still have a king to slay! I will leave this wayward straggler from Yggdrasil's outer leaves to you, Thorgunn, and our man Callum, I'm sure you'd love to do the honors! Now off I go to find and slay the king myself!

And so the Runecaster sneaks off into the compound, still invisible from the Blueman's mystical incantations, doing his best to stay out of the way of the alarmed dogheads and keepig a keen eye out for the doghead's leader. ===========================================================

Having already followed Rolf into battle against dogheads it is Rolf's hesitation to take in the situation that puts rest to the sway that the Norse folk had over Kerim.

Suddenly keenly aware he's in the middle of open ground, and imminently vulnerable, he casts hastily about taking in his own version of their situation.

What calamity can yet befall us, a Troll with a moat for it's hovell and moreover one that can leave it's domain when and where it wishes.

Kerim snorts in disgust, having encountered only sea Troll's before, though easily recognising it's landbound cousin. Come Rolf, haste must be our ally now hisses Kerim in melodramatic whispers, more from his paranoia about their lack of safety than worry from being overheard.

If Rolf doesn't make a move of his accord Kerim ducks off to help Callum and Thorgunn cut the Troll down to size, unaware of where Ravn has gone. ===========================================================

Whats worse is her seems to be getting them in some sort of order, as they appear to be ready to charge down on the hapless Thorgunn … <b>(Thorgunn 8 pts damage)

Rolf, Yuri and Kerim, all draw steel and head towards the conflict at the gate, where Callum takes on the tall greenie … Callum’s sword thumps into the creatures neck almost severing its head,  and its screech echoes around the clearing ..  However suddenly it lunges forwards, and both sets of talons rake down Callum’s chest while its head flops slightly to the side, causing it to miss, as it tries to bite Callum as well.

Deciding that a troll, several archers AND a bunch of coordinated dogheads with clubs might be a wee bit much of a mouthful for Thorgunn and Callum, regardless of his trust in their combined ferocity, Ravn decides to tip the scales just a little. He makes sure that no dogheads are within immediate hearing range and begins a quiet chant:

"Warhammer's Wielder
Lord of Lightning
stems of strength set
in hefty hands
fear-field fowls be fed!

Wealth's Wielder
Lord of Lands
seeds of siredom sow
in heroes' hearts
richly ravens reap!

Wisdom's Wielder
Lord of Lords
mend minds of mellow
hearts of hard
pride and prowess praise!

Thorgunn is still trying to make sense of the indistinct shapes when the three arrows hit him. He staggers under the impact as, rather suddenly, his vision clears. Also rather suddenly he becomes very angry indeed and bellows with rage. Recognising the bark of dogheaded shouting nearby, he turns and charges the nearest nasties (presumably the club-wielding beasts). With an axe in either hand he flings himself into a flanking enemy, (with the rest between him and the archers and delaying being totally surrounded, hopefully).

[Private to GM: I've assumed the club-dogs are nearer than the bow-dogs. I have not assumed that Thorgunn was within range of the Bless spell. I hope so! If so the to-hits for the axes will be 18 and 13. Not sure if both are hits so I've rolled damage for both axes and guessed at damage of 1d6. Damage is 5 and 5 from each axe with no adds.]

Callum and the Greenie, exchnage blows again  -  both scoring hits on the Other.  While callum's blow drives into the side of the Greenie, it head  doesn't  seem to  be flopping about  so much this time and it  manages to lock its teeth into Callum's shoulder  (Callum 9 pts of dammage  and  -3 to future attack rolls - cos you have a Greenie  attached to  your  shoulder  :)

Rolf and his  small support  force are  now in a position to  help battle the Greenie -  but  there is a risk of hitting callum in the heat of the battle.

(All four of  you  benefit  from Ravn's bless spell)

Thorgunn rushes the nearest dogheads and engages them blindly, stiking a couple of blows, and one  goes to the floor,, and the beserk warrior is  fortunate -  none of the many, many dogheads  manage  to  strike back ...

Rav'n casts his spell and then  surveys the scene, noting the Doghead leader marshalling his troops, from behind  9as you  would expect of  such cowardly creatures)

*tsk, tsk*

Shaking his invisible head yet smiling at Thorgunn's valiant and death-defying charge toward the overwhelming numbers of dogheads, Ravn sneaks into the nearby hut to search for Alhevro.

Little does he know that there is another force of dogheads, most likely lead by the infamous Alhevro, approaching from behind his friends, thus explaining their sudden eagerness to demonstrate heroism and get across despite the towering troll that bars the way.

Nay, the Runecaster's hopes are stil high that he may yet save the day despite the Constable's bowstring-happiness and the clever scheme's consequent failure.

Spar firmly in hand, his one eye keenly scanning the interior, he thinks to himself:

Come out, come out wherever you are.....

The sheer force of Thorgunn's charge, aided by the axe which bit deeply into a shoulder, causes one of the dogheads to crumple to the ground. There is a lone Norse cry of delight amidst the barks, growls and howls. Thorgunn faces a veritable, writhing sea of club-wielding, snarling beasts. But there is one barking more loudly than the rest and, as another doghead moves to occupy the space held by his fallen comrade, Thorgunn catches a glimpse of the animated leader at the back of the pack. A determined grin spreads across the ranger's face. 'When the Valkyries come for me today' he promises himself, 'they shall find me at your throat!'

But there is no way through to that prize just yet and a new plan forms in his head. Suddenly, Thorgunn darts to his right and using an axe to fend off any incoming blows, he sprints for the rickety fence that cordons off the forest. The forest that the dogheads are so fearful of, he hopes.

[Private to GM: Well, it's a plan only slightly less crazy than the one that got us here, but I reckon it represents a slim chance of keeping him alive without him turning coward! Thorgunn means to crash through the rickety fence into the forest where he hopes fear will prevent the dogheads from following him. There he intends to extricate the three arrows from his person and look for a way to get at the pack leader. With any luck, Elspeth will spot him and render some triage.]

Thorgunn suddenly comes to his senses, realising he is alone in the middle of the doghead camp, and locked into battle with an overwhelming foe ….

Taking the dogheads slightly by surprise, he suddenly breaks off from the combat and sprints for the fence separating the compound from the woodland beyond.

He crashes through it to a sort of safety, and the dogheads chasing him skid to a a halt just before they cross the fench …

But the is still the bowmen to worry about and more arrows rain down on Thorgunn, now that he is free of the doghead pack. (OOC: Thorgunn- 10 points of damage) [Private to Thorgunn Kylansson : This  woodland  feels  spooky  and threatening -  almost  overbearing -  really  not a comfortable  place to be ...]

[Private to Ravn Ashengray: Ravn, on the other hand sneaks, invisible like a thief, into the huts. Not quite sure what he was expecting to see - he actually discovers more dogheads - he guesses females as they are slightly smaller than the warriors (and its hard to tell in the poor light) and what he must assume are young. They are certainly much smaller that the adults, and many are curled into one large ball in the corner - almost cowering ….]

Over at the gateway things are going much better - the combined attacks of Rolf, Yuri, Callum and Kerim have carved the Big Greenie to bits, and they can advance into the gateway of the compound.

However, they hear a force approaching from behind them...

A quick glance reveals a column of mounted men, some bearing bows, some lances - all lead by a young woman. And better still the leader looks familiar - the shiny chain mail and helm - but most importantly - the black headband flying behind her in the wind, indicates it is indeed Madelyn Thorne-Black leading the 4th cavalry.

Seeing the immediate threat has been carved to bits, Rolf turns his attention to the battlefield.  The others were doing well, cutting down the dogheads.  And approaching, Rolf grins to see an old friend approaching with a force of cavalry about her.  But the grin fades as he turns to see Thorgunn.  Would the cavalry arrive in time to aid the beleaguered warrior?

The archers, that's the immediate threat to Thorgunn.  Sheating the blade and stringing the bow, Rolf turns his attentions to the doghead archers.  Perhaps the shorter range, or the approaching allies, but something improves his aim as he sights in on the nearest.  Two quick sheaf arrows find doghead flesh with a solid thunk.

OOC:  So, Ralf's own (successful?) attack on the Big Greenie had nothing to do with it being hacked to bits?  :)

Lienlllynn, realizing that the mounted folk are likely here to help, sprints down toward the encampment, his long, unbound hair flying like a banner behind him. As he nears the encampment, seeing the dogheads brings a sense of cold, deadly urgency to him. He is now the hunter, they the prey, and by the gods, he'll have their blood for the indignities done him during his imprisonment.

He knocks an arrow as he runs, slowing just long enough to do so, and when he gets within range, he lets fly with two arrows, at the dogheads nearest the front of the pack.

Greatly disappointed by the evident absence of the dogheads' notorious leader Alhevro, Ravn leaves the shivering dogheads in the huts and returns to the courtyard. Spear in hand, he walks with long strides, heading straight for the doghead's apparent leader.

I shall not leave this battle unbloodied, he thinks to himself, and if the king is away then his prince shall take his stead on the tip of my spear, so help me Odin!

OOC: I suppose getting there will take a while. Please let me know whether more than one combat round of walking is required to reach the doghead leader. ===========================================================

Ignoring the derisory yips and yaps from the dogheaded beasts, Thorgunn bears down on the dilapidated fence. With a lunge he crashes through it, sending splintering wood in several directions. He stumbles as an arrow find its mark, a sharp pain in his shoulder alerting him to its presence. Once through the fence, he breaks left, heading for the cover of the shrubbery. Another arrow finds his defenceless flesh and he stumbles once more, a grimace of anguish and pain upon his face. He finds himself on his knees, behind a wide-boled tree. His life's essence ebbs from the many wounds. Working as quickly as he can and amidst great pain, he grits his teeth and begins to draw out the arrows. Using strips of cloth torn from his clothing, he applies tournequets where they are needed. As he works, Thorgunn feels the hackles rise at the back of his neck. There was something about this place, something not nice. He resolves to complete his grim task as quickly as possible. Though his energy is at a low ebb through his injuries and loss of blood, he continues to move in his chosen direction, lurching from tree to tree (OOC: I.e. left from the breach in the fence).

Kerim is about to suggest a charge, buoyed by the bless, however Yuri beats him to it.  Whilst Yuri prepares his spell he lets fly with two arrows, keen to rid the world of as many dogheads as possible.

"Mayhap then it would in the meantime serve to remind them to run for cover if by chance and skill these arrows could find a mark"

Kerim fires, both successful hits (wow the dice roller to the rescue) 19 & 18, both shots at different targets so as to threaten as many dogheads as possible into fleeing, if possible, those using bows to pepper Thorgunn.  Much as he could blame the warrior for causing his predicament for yet he still does not understand the Norse driving motivations it still remains that he is an ally and thus worth defending.

He waits eagerly to see how long Yuri will take, reaching for another arrow, but ready to drop his bow should the melee weapons be called for (he will collect the bow later). ===========================================================

Howling dogheads scattering and fleeing left and right, Ravn strides across the chaotic courtyard, completely ignoring the buzz of arrows as he heads directly towards the dogheads' leader who still stands there barking, trying to maintain at least some order of discipline in his demoralized troops.

The first thrust of the spear is faulty, however, and looks to the casual observer most of all like a tap of the tip against the dogheads leader's armored torso.

Ravn, immediately turning visible, hopes the failed attack will be perceived as fairness and good sportsmanship and prepares for the imminent face-down with a provocative remark to the doghead.

Leaning against the bole of a birch tree Thorgunn pauses to regain his breath. Pain seems to be in every part of his body, sapping his energy. The ranger's feeling of unease increases as a thick fog envelopes him. With a grunt he heaves himself away from the tree, leaving a bloody stain on the silvery bark. A woman's voice pierces the fog, a dog can be heard to bark somewhere in front of him. Thorgunn lurches towards the sound of Elsbeth's voice, the fog obscuring all but his outstretched hand.

Kerim upon seeing the billowing mist hisses, "Their leader no doubt expects this will save their worthless hides" and fires two more arrows into the mists, mis-reading the fog as coming from the doghead leader they met before who used spells on them and not Elsbeth.  After all with the cavalry and combat he is extremely unlikely to be able to pick Elsbeth's call from behind the doghead pack.

His first arrow sails into the mists, where moments before the dogheads stood, his second however strikes the earthen floor just short of the mist, cutting a small divot.

Rolf is taken aback a bit at Madelyn's abrupt change of topic.  Not that it's not called for, Madelyn has no clue as to who's where and we're all friends of hers.  Still, it rankles a bit, though Rolf refuses to take notice of such a base and petty reaction.

"Elsbeth is in the wood yonder and is, I believe, quite safe.  The dogheads fear it, it's a holy place of Elsbeth's people.  Ravn is enchanted, not visible.  His duty was to slay the leader.  I haven't seen it, so I figure things must be going well."

He looks around, takes stock of the battle.  It's going well, now that Madelyn's troops are on the scene.

Over by the fog, the doghead leader leaps back in surprise as Ravn suddenly appears in front of him. Taken completely by surprise the doghead fails to dodge Ravn’s trust, and the Rune caster’s spear glides painfully along his rib, slicing into the scrawny flesh. Surprised still, the large doghead swings at Ravn with a clawed hand, but the blow glances off of the almost equally surprised Norseman. Shouting furiously in the guttural doghead language, the leader backs away, along the side of the fog, trying to put some of his mean between himself and this enemy in front of him.

The sudden appearance of what appears the be a friend in front of them, disrupts the charge of the mounted warriors and they mill about for a moment before driving back into the doghead foe. However, one of them takes a mighty blow from one of the dogheads and is unhorsed. He appears to be lying on the floor in the middle of the enemy, hardly moving ….

Kerim’s arrows continue to strike into the dogheads, along with a barrage from the mounted archers, and most of the enemy start to move, quickly towards the main gate …

As they run towards the party shrieking, another group of dogheads pour from the hut and charge towards the main party too .. this group, however, appears to consist of women an young dogheads …

Meeleek and Peter make it as far as the bridge to the compound, where they find the tall greenie isn’t as dead and dismembered as they thought .. Slowly it pulls itself to its feet, apparently unharmed, its talons and fangs ready for further battle.

"Els Beth" Thorgunn calls yet again, his eyes attempting to pierce the mist. Something catches his eye. A light! Dancing in the gloom somewhere ahead of him, but it is getting smaller. It's moving away! "Els Beth!" he calls again, "Are you carrying a torch? I can see one. Call to me again". As quietly as his tired and injured body will allow, Thorgunn heads for the light. Unsure as to whether he will find Elsbeth or something altogether more sinister, he grips his axe tightly in his good hand.

"A beautiful sight indeed", Yuri adds to Rolf's own comments as Madelyn rides up to them.

Seeing his spell is not needed, Yuri does not cast it, however when the fallen 'greenie' gets back up, he turns to deal with that.  "I can deal with this creature", he confidently states.  "I think...", he not so confidently then adds.

"You're no doghead, but you'll sure as hell do", he curses the creature as he walks towards it.

[Private to JohnB: I'm going to assume that if not before, Yuri's at least remembered a bit about trolls now.  Get to 10 feet and cast flaming sphere on it.  If other people are in melee with make sure the flames do not injure them.] ===========================================================

Ravn again attacks the doghead leader, leaping forward and thrusting his spear at his evasive target. Again the doghead makes a dodging maneuver but not fast enough - it only manages to stave off the worst as the Runecaster's spear cuts into its chest.

"Take THAT! And there's more where that came from!"

Outside the gate the troll pulls itself together and clambers to its feet, grinning evilly at Meeleek and Peter, who both fall back, and take up what appear to be casting stance.

From inside the compound, Yuri sees their predicament and starts to advance on the troll from the rear also, apparently, prepared to cast.

Caught in the middle the troll stands undecided …

[Private to Yuri: thought I would allow you the honour of describing the incineration :} Post it as graphically as you like]

The mounted archers continue to pick off dogheads as they flee towards the only exit - which appears to be blocked by the remains of the party .

Madelyn seeing one of her men fall, turns away abruptly from Rolf and charges down on the doghead who unhorsed her man, her lance spitting it cleanly. The lance is dragged from her hand as the impaled doghead slides up the shaft leaving her temporarily weapon-less in the middle of the fleeing dogheads ….

Callum follows her on foot, wading into the stream of dogheads swinging his huge sword menacingly. The very look of his distorted features and limbs accompanied by the steam rising from his spiked, causing the enemy to falter and try and step around him. However the huge Celtic warrior is not in the mood for that as he swings and carves one of the creatures completely in two.

Over by the line of the fog, Ravn pursues the doghead leader, who takes one last look at the terrifying figure in front of him, and turns to follow his men towards the exit. [Private to Ravn: a free hit against his back should you want it sir - and what’s more I rolled it as a hit :P please feel free to describe a gory death for the beast]

Kerim, Rolf and Lienlllyn stand together as a small group, blocking the only exit for the fleeing doghead, peppering them with arrows.

Edgar, deciding he needs a better view of proceedings, flaps lazily across from the edge of the woodland to alight on the roof of one of the huts. [private to Edgar: Don’t forget you have a few spells …]

Over in the fog, still hidden from the party’s view, Elsbeth finds Thorgunn (with the help of an errant firefly) and casts cure light wounds. Again the power seems to well up around her and Thorgunn suddenly feels himself renewed (OOC: Thorgunn 10 HP back)

The fire fly seems to bob and dance around them in the mist - and in the distance they can hear what sounds like tinkling laughter and the clapping of hands. ===========================================================

Perched atop the roof of one of the shabby huts that house the dogheads' slaves, Edgar presides over the battle below, turning his gaze in this direction and that, as he watches.

The flight of the dogshead leader is but one of many events that unfold before him, but it is that which the raven fixes on, his beady eyes watching the beast stumble after its fellows, the runecaster terrible in pursuit.

"That is not how it should be," Edgar mutters to himself, almost crossly, glancing down at the iron band that encircles one leg before raising his head once more, his eyes now burning with some inner fire as he raises his voice to issue forth a great shout ...

"Kneel !" he commands, all his energies directed towards the dogsheads' leader, fueled by the scorn of the Morrigan. ===========================================================

Appearing like a ghost from the mist, Elsbeth causes Thorgunn to jump in surprise. A second passes before the ranger lowers his axe. "Aah, Els Beth" he says, "You seem to have fared better than I! Come take me to the battle". But  she stops him, placing a gentle arm upon his. He quietens in response to her soft voice and simply stares at the braids of auburn hair falling upon her shoulders. He senses a benevolent force work its way through his body, can almost feel it being repaired by an otherworldly presence. It brings a smile to his face. "Thank you, lady" he says to her, then looks towards the direction he supposes he came from, "Now, where's this scrap then?"

His previous claims of being able to deal with the greenie having apparently fallen on deaf ears, Yuri wastes no more time and quickly casts his spell before Rolf can close on the beast, and get himself burnt in the process.

Chanting the arcane words as if they were acid darts that he could hurl at the beast, the Gypsy completes his spell, and tiny red dot flies from his hand, quickly turning into a sphere of flame as it hits the ground at the beasts feet.

The sphere immediately begins to do its work, burning flesh from the horrid creature, and the putrid smell quickly permeates through the air.  Yuri's initial look of glee is quickly replaced by repulsion and disgust as the beast's screams fill his ears and the smell saturates his nostrils, yet he keeps his focus on the ball of flame, moving with the creature if and when it breaks free of Peter's entanglement.

"I said", he manages to start his sentence, before a cough is forced from his lips, "I can handle it!"

The heat of the sphere is such that any that draw near the beast would find their hair singed, if not worse. ===========================================================

With Rolf no longer at his side, and noticing that he and Lienllynn are in the direct path of those fleeing Kerim grabs the Elf's arm urging him aside near the troopers.

He draws and looses arrow after arrow at the fleeing Dogheads, though only the warriors as his conciense prevents aiming at non combatants, even though they are dogheads.  Rather more loudly than necessary he says to Lienllynn "An arrow for each perhaps may remind them not to return henceforth.  Nor shall indeed they sit with comfort for many a week."

Kerim's smile, or lack thereof shows that a small amount of inner conflict rages within.  On one hand he has no love of dogheads and their cruelty, yet it seems to him that they live as do many others he's seen, not in the total barbarism that he thought.  Though of course he hasn't seen or talked with the slaves yet.  In effect the enthusiasm of the Norse folk is wearing off and his own personality is returning to regain control. ===========================================================

Ravn yells out his dissatisfaction at seeing the back rather than the front of his opponent when the doghead leader rushes past him and races toward the gate - there is hardly much honor to be earned in stabbing anyone from behind so, initially, he halts his blow.

But then Uddhugg caws in his ear, and true wisdom is revealed to him: - but there is much need for the wisdom which this doghead holds of his master's whereabouts..!

He nods to himself and, quicker than the speed of lightning it would seem, swirls around his own axis and lands a devastating blow - into thin air. To make matters worse, his balance is completely lost in the haphazard maneuver so, eyes wide with surprise and a silent word of Odin's praise that he did not accidentally skewer any allies, he stumbles several paves forward, stopping only when he trips over the legs of the downed horseman and falls, face first, into the mud.

There is neither benevolence nor sweet remembrance in his eyes, only frustrated surprise and red-eyed anger when he looks up, his face covered with mud, at the kneeling Madelyn.

"..you..?"

With reality coming back in large leaps and bounds Kerim, still with bow in hand automatically firing at enemies, observes "Many indeed do they number and foolish were we to attack with so few.  Had but not the warrior maiden arrived we would indeed have suffered poorly at their hands, clever plan or not."

As he fires on opponents he slowly moves closer to the cavalry, hoping to  ensure that no doghead will think of passing between them and instead make for the less impeded exit. (he hasn't stopped to think of those who might still be on the bridge)

Despite his distraction Kerim's first shot is as about as good as it gets, striking a doghead between the ribs, though the shaft must have stopped short of finding the heart for it continues to run.  His second hits a doghead in the hip, tearing it's clothing but apparently doing no harm.  Still it is the warning he wanted.

(OOC: Ravn, the die roller just started being nice to me, I think I've had 5 rolls above 17 in a row, but then back to a 9)

Thorgunn halts mid-stride as Elsbeth means to prevent him from rejoing the affray. For the first time he notices what can only be described as the sounds of frivolity coming from somewhere about them. The ranger's eyes narrow with suspicion. "Els Beth" he answers the druidess, "even now our fellows fight for their lives against countless dozens of beast-cowards. Your skill with the Healing Power has aided me greatly but we must put it to good use! Our companions may yet be hard-pressed, the Valkyries awaiting their final glory. As I tended my wounds, I heard the the noise of mounted warriors. Whether friend or foe, I know not, but surely we must rush to aid our companions".

The firefly pauses as the lady druid speaks, then zooms closer, briefly studying her friendly smile.  Buzzing about happily, the firefly enjoys the soothing beat of the druid’s voice as she talks to the healed man, then spirals off, circling the man’s head.  Giggles erupt again as she comes to a halt in front of his face, only to shoot up way above them, her claps fading into the thick air above.

From the security of the lush leaves of a tall tree, she looks down, eyes alert with curiosity at the pair as they talk.  Noticing the man take a tentative step in the direction of the battle, she rushes down, angrily buzzing, to poke him in the face.  "No, no, no!" the tinkly voice resounds around them.

The firefly comes to a halt, stopping just inches away from the lady’s face.  The buzzing of her wings wanes to a hum as she hovers and starts to reply in Druidic.  Though her squeaky efforts are almost completely stifled by a low sob, it is clear to see she is agitated at the man.

As she finishes speaking the sobs deepen and the hum returns to a throbbing buzz as anger fills her once more.  She spins around, flying towards the man again and gives him a sharp pinch on the ear, shouting a "Stop, stop!" before flying back to the druid, lingering defensively above her shoulder.

The troll is held fast by Peter’s Entanglement and Yuri arrives with a Flaming Sphere, which he continues to roll back and forth across the troll - burning both the troll and the plants holding him at the same time. Trollish screams and the stink of singed flesh fill the air as the troll struggles to free itself from the constraining plants and the burning fire. Suddenly the plant growth weakens just enough and the troll lurches free from the entanglement and takes a few steps towards Meeleek and Peter, claws raised in anger and pain.

The sudden movement catches Yuri unawares and the troll manages to escape from the flaming sphere as well.

Rolf has rushed up to the scene to offer help, but turned when Yuri claimed control of the situation. Intending to head across to Madelyn, Rolf is suddenly faces with a whole crowd of dogheads rushing towards him.

Kerim and Lienlllyn have already seen the danger and moved over by the mounted archers that Madelyn bought with her, and continue firing arrows into the doghead throng. Indeed along with the troopers fire, many of the dogheads find themselves with an arrow or two sticking into their flank to act as a hurry up - as everyone seems to have taken Kerim’s lead and to be firing randomly, rather than concentrating on individual dogheads. One of kerim;s arrows, however strikes a doghead in the eye, and it falls to the floor, blinded and scrabbling unable to continue its wild charge for the gate. [private to Kerim Alakani: Don’t normally play criticals (neither hits or misses) but sometimes it’s a good reason to describe something a bit different :}]

Suddenly - as the doghead hordes continue to pour forwards, herded by the mouted troopers and slaughtered by the new look Callum, who appears to  be  right in the middle of  his  element - its clear that Rolf, Yuri and the troll are the panicking dogheads and freedom …. Well, as well as the only things between the panicking dogheads and Peter and Meeleek, …

Over by the fog things are slowly resolving themselves. Madelyn manages to bind wounds and stabilise her fallen soldier, and Ravn charges towards the fleeing doghead leader - only to fall over Madelyn’s feet. The two glare at each other for a moment, and exchange a few words, before Ravn goes charging off after his chosen quarry.

Again Edgar comes to the rescue from atop the doghead huts. “Halt” he shouts in his croaky voice, and the confused doghead leader slides suddenly to a stop, a shout, which sounds like it might be doghead swearing, echoing loudly from his lips. [Private to Ravn Ashengray: The doghead’s sudden halt catches you unawares - you have no chance to pull your blow - +4 to hit +6 to damage]

Over in the Fog, Elsbeth and Thorgunn are helped to find each other by the dancing light of a firefly, and Elsbeth is only half surprised to find the extra healing delivered to Thorgunn at the hands of her goddess.

Elsbeth is just about to dispel her mystical Fog, when the firefly starts speaking, and trying to keep Thorgunn away from the battle. Fog forgotten for the moment Elsbeth tries to calm the battle hungry Thorgunn and the irritated (and probably irritating) firefly. ===========================================================

As Meeleek's shout is heard, Rolf flings up his left arm to cover his eyes, remembering his instructions to the mage.  After a moment, Rolf sets both hands on the hilt of his battle blade and prepares to wet the ground with doghead blood.

[Private to GM: John, I'm not sure if Rolf can attack yet.  I'll understand if your response to this question is a bit slow.  ;)] ===========================================================

So saying, she holds her hand up for the firefly to land on, speaking softly to it.

The ranger turns, an expectant look on his face as he awaits the dispersal of the unnatural fog. His expression changes to one of puzzlement as he notices the firefly hovering around Elsbeth for the first time. Suddenly it darts toward him. He ducks instinctively, bringing his axe up in a half-hearted attempt to swat the thing away. Too slow! He lets out a grunt of surprise as the peculiar creature pokes him in the face, its squeaky voice shouting "No, no no!"

Thorgunn grumbles still as he watches the thing fly back toward Elsbeth, irritation evident upon his face. "A fairy!" he cries, "Mischievous, trollish these creatures are. Kin of Loki!"

It comes at him again, agitated, angry. Again he swipes at it... and again he misses. Another indignant grunt, he rubs his ear where the creature had pinched him.

The Norse half-breed scowls at the unlikely pair; the tall human and the tiny, flitting fairy. "Fairies care not for the fortunes of men" he says, "but for the mischief that they can make for them! While it holds us here our companions may be dying in the field. There we must go. Our honour depends upon it, as do our fellows. Do not expect me to visit the field of heroic deeds only after the Valkyries have left with the chosen".

He turns with a snort. The din of battle seems to be lessening. A sense of urgency invades him and he heads purposefully in that direction.

As the dogheads approach, Rolf sets himself with sword ready.  He feints to the side, then with a quick spin, he swings the blade down in a slanted line that had been known to split it's target full in twain.  It's for naught though as the doghead ducks to the side and Rolf's blade swings through nothing but air.  It takes him a moment to recover from the poorly aimed stroke, to stand in the way of the next approaching doghead. ===========================================================

Fenodree listens quietly as the lady tries to soothe the angered warrior; his stubborn retort earns him an exaggerated “Hmmpf”.  Long sobs still cause the tiny glowing form to shudder as she watches him stomp away, then floats down onto the kindly proffered hand.

As the fog clears, the now dim light in the Druid’s hand extinguishes altogether.  Fenodree’s faerie form slowly emerges, her body reclaiming its true image as she sits, cross-legged, elbows on knees in her comfortable seat.  She holds her sulky little face in her hands, her big black eyes gleaming with the sorrowful tears.  Grumbling between sniffles, she shakes her head.  “Hmmpf, Twollish.  He finks wif his h..h..head, not his hear..r..rt.” ===========================================================

Fenodree rises to kneel on Elsbeth’s hand, quietly regarding the warm and friendly person.  The sniffles slowly halt and she wipes away the glistening streak of tears.  For the first time, she looks straight up at Elsbeth, allowing a proper view of her pretty face as a smile begins to replace the sulky frown.

The vision isn’t unlike that of a butterfly, her four pearlescent wings, twitching softly behind her add wonderfully to her ethereal beauty.  The soft lilac tone of her hair, fades to a softer lilac hue as it comes to her skin.  Two tiny horns just poke above the surface of her hair and her big black eyes seem as dark and deep as the night.

She rises to curtsey as Elsbeth introduces herself, smoothing her tiny hands over the teal leather corset, then down over the aqua wrap-around skirt on her hips.  The skirt, though slit straight up the middle nearly all the way up, ends just above her high, strappy leather sandals.  Happy giggles resound again as she stands straight, from the curtsey.  “Whee, Elsbef, Elsbef“ she chants, clapping.  “My name is Fenodree, remaining potector of this great fowest!” she gestures her hands grandly as she speaks, giggles bubbling forth once more as she finishes. ===========================================================

Fenodree’s smiling eyes fill with mirth as she is referred to as a Lady.  Her teeny form practically throbs with glee.  Taking off from Elsbeth’s hand as excitement rushes to her wings lifting her happy and smiling into the air, she poses gracefully for her spectator.  Faking a swirling dance with an imaginary suitor, her arms poised elegantly as if around him, she twirls and moves with the grace of an angel.  Her composure is but briefly acquired though as she plops onto her back, rolling around on Elsbeth’s hand.  She titters, holding her tummy as the waves of amusement pass.

The wind blows, the breeze calming, as she looks back up to catch her new friend gaze in the direction in which the man recently left.  She feels her merriment ebb as Elsbeth’s tone becomes more serious.  Shaking her head, despondent, she listens respectfully for the lady to finish.  Unable to hide her sadness, her eyes plead with her to stay even as her mouth answers in contradiction.  “If that where your heart lead you my Lady, I understand.”  ===========================================================

Thorgunn blindly strides through the opaque fog marring his vision in the hope of achieving the battlefield before all hope of glory is lost to him. The slap of a low branch against the side of his head serves as a stinging warning of the dangers that await the careless traveller in such conditions. His lank, red hair flaps around his shoulders as his head snaps back in recoil. "Bastards!" is his only comment.

But at last Elsbeth dispels her magic and the fog recedes. The ranger's speed increases as first the trees, then the dilapidated fence come into view. With a yell laced with pent up frustration, he kicks a hole in the fence and strides purposefully into the camp once more. A moment is all it takes for him to identify the handiest recipient for his battle-wrath; a lone doghead to his (and Madelyn's) right.

With a roar he charges the now suspecting enemy. ===========================================================

-----------------------------------------------------------
At the gate, Meeleek yells for caution and Peter backs away covering his eyes, but Yuri is so engrossed in guiding his ball of fire across the Troll, that he fails to heed the call. Suddenly a blinding fan of clashing colors shoots forth from Meeleek’s hand aimed directly at the troll. However, the fan continues on past the Troll and covers Yuri too. However it seems that something must of penetrated the bard’s concentration for just at the appropriate moment he turns his head to the side and blinks. After a mere second of disorientation at the bright lights he is ready for battle again. Which is a good job really, as the noises from behind him indicate the surging mass of dogheads is getting closer.

The Troll, on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky. Apparently not understanding common - or hell bent on reaching Meeleek and Peter- it continues to force its way forward. The clashing colors strike it full I the face, and it raises it hands to its eyes screaming in terror, just as Yuri’s Ball of Flame catches up with it again.

Shuddering in terror, the troll sinks to its knees and then falls to the floor as the fire drains the last of its life force. Perhaps this time it will stay dead …

Indeed Meleek’s spell is so powerful that two of the dogheads crossing the bridge behind Yuri drop immediately to the ground - although after a quick glance towards their companions, the other two press on

Over in the fog Elsbeth and Thorgunn meet Fenodree and seem to come to different conclusions about the fairy’s intentions. However, Elsbeth clears her fog and she, Fenodree and Laddie make their way slowly to the field of battle, talking as they go.

Thorgunn rushes forward - only to realise that the battle is moving away from him. Mounted troopers are pushing the dogheads towards the only exit, while others, assisted by Kerim and Lienllyn, pepper them with arrows to help them on their way.

Callum and Rolf stand proud in the middle of the sea of Dogheads, bravely swinging their swords. Again Callum cleaves a doghead almost in two, and the resulting fountain of blood further drenches the demonic looking fighter, and the closest dogheads try to edge out of his range in their charge for the gate …

Rolf , however, is less lucky. His blow misses the fleeing dogheads, but he still stands resolutely in the gateway, almost as if he is trying to block their only line of escape. One of the dogheads, lashes at Rolf with what appears to be a kitchen knife on the way past, but the blow is easily deflected by the ranger’s armour.

Madelyn manages to get her man patched up, and stands ready sword in hand - only to see the dogheads fleeing from her and her troops. Like Thorgunn she will have to run to get into the battle …

Ravn, swipes the doghead leader with a blow from the butt of his spear - and the doghead falls to the ground as if pole axed at the rune caster feet. Edgar watches the cleric and the doghead intently - ready to try and intervene again should he be required.

However, he also sees the first of the dogheads making a break past Rolf at the gate ”Behind you …” he shouts at the bard, as he starts to back away towards the woods again, plucking at Meleek’s sleeve as he goes. ===========================================================

Ravn kicks the felled doghead leader over and places the ornate tip of his spear on the semi-canine villain's throat.

"Your choice, trollish fiend - live or die?"

The Runecaster's muck-stained yet angrily triumphant face signals quite clearly that he has no moral qualms about spearing the gnoll. The fact that he hasn't already might suggest to the captured doghead that he just might have a chance to escape this defeat alive.

Feeling the pressure of the knife against his armor, Rolf brings his sword down in a serious overhead, double-handed stroke, angled only to keep it from catching in the dirt after it cleaves the doghead in half.  Unfortunately, the doghead is too agile and Rolf too distracted for a proper blow and it again swings wide.

OOC: Rolf.  Why do you think Kerim chose the sidelines.  Yeah it's only a die roller, but if it's representative then the character thinks to himself "Hey, I'm not that lucky of late, better play it safe".

Kerim watches and wonders what can be done about Rolf and Callum.  He understands that Rolf would likely move aside to let the dogheads flee, but that Callum wouldn't.  He understands further that Rolf would not leave Callum to face them alone.

His 'Norse Fed' bloodlust draining from him with every arrow shot he turns to the nearest mounted soldier and tells them that the person who stands amid the onrush of fleeing Dogheads is a Warden for Earl Richard and that he needs aid, hoping that whilst the soldiers may not heed any command from him the mention of the Earl and the status of Warden might gain their attention.

If none of them heed this call he will sling his bow and draw out his weapons and try to judge the right time to reinforce the group, on the premise that an addition of one more means a larger force and that the larger force is more likely to be avoided.  He hopes.

Such warm thoughts and heartfelt assurance of her companion does much to soothe Fenodree’s pangs as they approach the forest’s edge and she is soon looking back at Elsbeth with renewed respect.  ‘So lovely, lovely’ she thinks gladly before turning her attention to the ongoing conflict.

The chaotic resonance thumping from the battle affects Fenodree before her eyes take in the scene, she is practically throbbing with indignation as her sights finally alight on the hated dogheads.  Shouting her support from the sidelines she takes care to stay close to her escort.  “Aye, foul beasties, nashty beasties.  They gobble up faeries like ripe bewwies.” spits Fenodree, her little hands clenched into fists as she urges.  ”Chase ‘em away, chase ‘em away!”

Sensing a change in her friend’s demeanour, she halts her rantings and looks back in curiosity to study the woman’s pretty face.  ”Madlyn, who’s Madlyn?”

Kerim, reaching Rolf and Callum's side swings at any doghead that passes too close in order to remind them to run wide.  His Cutlass catches a Doghead in the small of it's back but it runs so quickly in retreat that Kerim can't tell if it hurt.  It is only the dogheads speed that saves it from Kerim's next attack with his punching dagger.

Peter and Meeleek both decide to back away from the entrance - Peter heading back to the putative safety of the woods and Meeleek diving towards the moat – leaving the last section of the exit from the stronghold clear.

Yuri starts to roll his flaming sphere back towards himself, but is surprised as it starts to splutter and fade. [Private to Yuri: It lasts one Round per level :} and I think, after you rolled it back and forth across the troll, you have probably had your time :}] Following Peter and Meeleek’s example, Yuri then decides to clear the area as well, and jumping over the side of the bridge disappearing from everyone’s view. [Private to Yuri: as you land you fall and turn your ankle slightly (rolled a 19 dex check for you :P) However - you can move - but at half movement rate :P

Under the bridge there is an opening, which none of you have been in a position to see before. It appears to go right under the bridge, but from this angle you can see that there is an entrance off of it – perhaps into the ex-trolls lair
]

Ravn knocks the Doghead leader senseless, and then stands over his captive - shouting encouragement to Thorgunn as the warrior charges past him into the fray. Running full tilt, Thorgunn soon catches up with the retreating dogheads and buries on of his axes between the shoulder blades of one of the retreating foe. However, his second axe misses and it takes him a moment to recover his first blade, so securely was it wedged into the large canine.

Madelyn follows suit, mounting her warhorse easily, she charges into the battle trying to mow the enemy down. Attacking from the rear, she is remarkable successful. Forcing the horse to rear, hooves crash down on unsuspecting dogheads and another receives a blow to the head from her sword. All the time the troopers harry the backs of the fleeing dogheads trying to drive them out of the compound.

Kerim’s attempt to call the, lightly armoured, mounted archers to charge into the dogheads is met with stony silence, as they continue to shoot arrows into the edges of the crowd, trying to maintain confusion and keep the dogheads moving. Seeing no response from them, Kerim decided to fight his way into the stream to stand with Callum, but the press of canine flesh is too thick, and he finishes up on the edges of the steaming mass of dogheads, helping to shepherd them through.

While Rolf takes a step or two forwards into the stream of dogheads, unconsciously making a bigger gap for them to stream past him. Callum swings wildly and for the first time misses with his mighty blow, and he lets out a bloodcurdling shout of frustration as he sees the last few enemy approaching him ….

Edgar, clearly happy with his part in the battle, flutters across the roof, so he can watch the fleeing dogheads more easily.

With the fog gone, Elsbeth sees the carnage properly for the first time and gets a most welcome surprise as she spots Madelyn, and her troops, there to help out. However, Fenodree’s questions distract the druid and before she can call out, Madelyn is gone again – seeking the heat of the battle as if driven by some inner need.

Ravn, joyful at seeing that the battle was a success, after all, hogties the unconscious doghead leader. Then, singing an old war tune in the Ancient Tongue, he waits there for the others to join him in the compound.

"Nu skall vi dra och supa
våldta, plundra, slåss och stupa
Odin's stämma kaller
vi vill fläcka skallar
stacka lik som vallar
kring Midgårds alla hallar
"

There is nothing even remotely skaldic about the tune, it is a plain warrior's praise to blood and carnage - and the Runecaster seems to enjoy every verse...

OOC Translation:
"Now lets us take to drinking
raping, plunder, fighting, dying
Odin's voice calls
we will cleave skulls
stack corpses like walls
'round each of Midgard's halls"

(it's modern Swedish, I know, but it sets the mood all right).

"Yes!" cries Fenodree, tears in her eyes as she watches on, proud of the victory she played no part in.  "See the dog'eads are fleein' and you will get to see your dear Madlyn soon." she says, beaming at Elsbeth.

"Oh, the fowest will be safe again... the fowest will be safe.  Thank you my lady, thank you".

With the dogheads now in full flight, their leader taken, their spirit broken, Edgar leaves his perch atop the hut and flies low across the packed earth of the compound to land a short distance before Ravn, strutting across the last few feet towards the priest of Odin.

"The beasts flee as if the Morrigan herself were at their heels."

Edgar's eyes meet those of Ravn. "It was a bold plan," he allows, "and if the tide was turned by those on horseback, still the songs will hail the courage and the prowess of those few who took the risk, all unknowing that aid was at hand.  The gods smile upon you, Runecaster." ===========================================================

Ravn look at his plumy namesake with wonder at what made the bird's sentiment turn so suddenly to his favor, expecting its motives to be a least tainted with some obscure self-serving goal.

"Yes, raven, they flee, victory is ours. And yes, the gods are smiling."

He looks up, casting a dissatisfied glare in Rolf's direction, far across the compound.

"They must be, mustn't they? That we be granted success despite our noble leader's stern determination to reveal our intent and have Thorgunn and me caught in their midst?"

The Runecaster's face contorts in a scornful grimace.

"But I am convinced it was unintentional. Which only proves that my southern aettlings have not only grown mellow-hearted, they have also grown soft in the head, that much is obvious. Well, I guess the Allseer's purpose with sending me here would be to show them the error of their ways, then... I just hope I can save Thorgunn from being smitten with their sickly ways." ===========================================================

Thorgunn roars as he bears down on a retreating doghead. Swinging first with the smaller axe, the ranger slices merely air, but the second, larger, axe buries itself deeply into the creatures back, snapping bone and tissue. Thorgunn roars with laughter as the creature staggers under the impact and it takes a moment or two to heave the axe free, blood spilling freely as he does so. Wasting no time, he swings with both axes again. To his delight, both strike home causing the hapless beast to cry out with fear and pain.

[Private to JohnB: I have assumed (from looking at the map) that the doghead Thorgunn just hit is not dead yet, so I've had another dig at it. I know the damage rolls were shite there, but one of them was a natural 20. Don't know whether you use critical hits or not so I just rolled the 1d8. Also I have assumed that the damage for the smaller axe was 1d6. This gives a whopping total of 3 damage.]

"Hmmm," the Runecaster grumbles, wanting even less than Edgar to discuss the matter. Instead, he turns his attention toward the continued sounds of slaughter. A terrible scream of anguish and a skyward splurt of doghead blood makr Thorgunn's work.

"Look yonder, Bloodfield's Harvester: There you see the honor and spirit which the Aesir favor!"

Another scream, this one cut short somewhat more abruptly, and a veritable fountain of blood cascading into the air where Callum passes.

"It would appear your Gods have similar gory preferences, raven... There is hope for our peoples still." ===========================================================

[OOC: OK folks that’s enough of this battle :P]

Ravn binds the doghead leader and sings a war-chant as Edgar flies down to land close to him. After exchanging views on the battle, they stand and watch with satisfaction as the remaining dogheads are driven from the compound.

Elsbeth, Fenodree and Laddie make their way slowly towards the Rune caster and Raven – half watching the retreating dogheads as well.

In just a few moments more all of the dogheads are chased out of the stronghold, as the troopers herd them outside - leaving the compound in the sole command of the party!

The few dogheads that are left are bound, unconscious or writing in agony on the floor. Now the battle has receded, the baying of the hounds in their pen becomes the dominant noise, although hoarse shouts can also be heard from behind the buildings.

[Private to Yuri: the tunnel under the bridge leads into a foul smelling chamber. The remains of a human leg and a pile of straw that may well have served as bedding] ===========================================================

Seeing the last of the dogheads flee, at least among those still able to flee, Rolf stops his efforts.  He uses the corpse of one of the fallen dogheads to wipe the blood from his sword.  Given his poor showing, it doesn't take long before he has it sheathed.  He also takes a moment to settle his bow and quiver.

Finally, he moves towards Madelyn.  "Thanks for the help."  He leans a bit closer, but holds short of any overt show in front of her men.  "I've missed you." he whispers. ===========================================================

Thorgunn stands atop his vanquished foe, its blood oozing across the ground from the wounds his axes have left. With a satisfied grunt, he pulls his weapons free from the lifeless carcass. The blades shed droplets of blood which plop softly onto the body below. He uses the dead doghead's fur to wipe the remaining blood from the weapons.

"Now for the booty" he mumbles, "And to reclaim what is mine". He pushes the axes behind his belt and strides over to the round huts. Ascending the wooden stairs, he turns and enters the hut on his right.

[Private to JohnB: Thorgunn will now behave in true Viking style and hunt for the booty. Principally, he'll be looking for the traditional chest and be hoping to find his own armour, shield and weapons that were confiscated upon his capture.]

Looking around as he sees the place for the first time, clearly dismayed by the Doghead corpses littering the ground  and the generally un-cared for felling about the place.

The baying of the dogs in the compound fills the air  with its own racket -  but  there is the  sound of  human voices  raising above it.  Looking around  he  asks  generally  "Who's  doing that  shouting?" ===========================================================

Most of the party congregate around Ravn and the doghead leader, although there are a number of other wounded and injured dogheads scattered around the area. Some of the injured are whining, clearly I pain - while a few other, perhaps braver souls, are trying to claw their way towards the exit.

The doghead leader wakes to find himself bound with Ravn standing, imperiously, over him - asking question. However, the dogheads only response is to snarl something back in his own guttural tongue.

---------------------

Madelyn and Rolf stand to one side – talking softly to each other - while Callum screams word of abuse and chases the last of the dogheads from the camp, slashing and swinging his huge sword towards their backs - always chasing, always harrying - trying to kill as many of the foul beasts as he possibly can …

----------------

Thorgunn and Lienlllyn burst into the huts, looking for their equipment and any treasure - and are surprised by the mess that’s in there. The first of the two huts is littered with bedding piles (made up of dries grasses mixed with strips of material), and a few basic living utensils. There are a few big cook pots, straps and harnesses for the hounds, and the other paraphernalia of daily life.

Once they push forward into the second hut things change. First there is only one large pile of bedding and the walls are decorated with various trophies. Amongst the trophies on the wall are Lienlllyn’s long sword and Thorgun’s axes, as well as a three short swords, another hand axe and 4 shields (One Buckler, two small and one medium) - there are also 3 spears and a halberd among the collection.

A quick search reveals a small sack hidden in the bedding and 4 larger sacks placed up against one of the walls.

[Private to Yuri: The trolls lair is very basic - but a search of its nest like bedding reveals a small velvet bag - inside are a couple of gems, a few gold coins (23) and an earring] ===========================================================

Caught in her own thoughts, she was not a little surprised at the form that shouted out a greeting.  'Pfft, a talking birdie.' she frowned, dropping back slightly from her favourite travelling place of Elbeth's shoulder before peeping back over curiously at the strange creature.  'Hmm, we'll see.'

A stifled giggle could just about be heard from behind Elsbeth as Fenodree swooped down.  Pausing only to make sure that she was as yet unspotted, she zoomed out, coming to a halt right in front of Edgar.  "Ah BOO!!" comes the squeaky shout.

Yuri continues to grin as Fenodree berates Edgar, gently shrug at the bird as she concludes.

"My friends call me 'Yuri', I would be honoured if you'd call me the same."

"Tell me, why are you in this dreadful place?", he asks after a brief pause. ===========================================================

Peter stands quietly, smiling as he looks across at Madelyn, but recognising that Rolf and Elsbeth have more reason to 'catch up'  with their  friend than he does.

He  starts to Follow Ravn and Meeleek across to the area  behind the building where he heard the shouting, but  stops  as he sees the fairie suddedenly  zoom from Elsbath's shoulder and  start to tease  but Yuri and Edgar.

His  smile remain as he  watches the small creature, and  waits  for her  response to Yuri's question about why  she is in this unusual place. ===========================================================

"Yuri, yep." agrees Fenodree with a curt nod.  Still not trusting Edgar, she constantly turns to affirm his position, a little frown on her face as she does so.

"This is my home." begins Fenodree turning back to Yuri.  It was a beautiful place until the dog'eads come.  The fowest and the meadow was such a happy place."  A tiny tear runs down her cheek as she talks, her big black eyes becoming opaque pools of sadness.

Her gaze strays across the field, the scene of violence and destruction a million miles from her thoughts.  "Faerie-folk from all around used to gather 'ere."  Her mouth twitches at a smile as she speaks, her small voice practically inaudible now.  "The happy moonlight shinin' down on us as we'd sing and dance."

With a shake of her head, her gaze is brought back to Yuri.  Her tiny hands rushing to wipe away the stream of silent tears.

When Elsbeth arrives, Rolf gives her a kind smile.  "I'm glad to see you well, Elsbeth.  And having brought friends."  He watches the antics of the fearie and chuckles aloud.  He seems far more relaxed than he had been for quite some time. ===========================================================
