Vision

Normal Vision

Standard colour vision enjoyed by most diurnal seeing beings, including humans. Normal vision is provided by sensors called cones deep inside the eyeball.

Ultra-vision

Monochrome low light vision enjoyed, to some extent or another, by most seeing beings, it is provided by sensors called rods deep inside the eyeball. Some people believe that ultra-vision can detect higher energy light that normal vision. Ultra-vision does not work below ground, or in other areas of complete darkness, unless alight source is present.

In humans and most other diurnal creatures ultra-vision is extremely limited, and is equated to the normal night vision. i.e. Humans etc. can see a bit in low light levels, but not clearly and with very little definition, they cannot make out fine movements or detail.

Nocturnal creatures, on the other hand, have very good night or ultra-vision. Purely nocturnal creatures only see using ultra-vision, and can never make out colours. Other creatures, such as elves, enjoy both type of vision and automatically switch between the two as required.

Normal vision is more powerful than ultra-vision and if light levels suddenly flare normal vision will cut in automatically, although there might be some pain associated with overloading ultra visual sensors in the eye. It can then take a while to adjust back to ultra-vision, while the brain readjusts to using ultra-vision.

Infra-vision

Infra-vision allows creatures to see low intensity heat radiation and is provided by sensors called boxes deep within the eye. There are two types of infra-vision, normal and enhanced infra-vision.

Normal infra-vision gives an unclear picture, characters can see that there is a humanoid shape but cannot identify the species, let alone an individual. Walls, doors and rock etc. are just about discernible, but creatures using normal infra-vision live in a blurry, hazy world. Normal infra vision is good to a maximum distance of 60 feet.

Enhanced infra vision is much more sensitive and is normally possessed by creatures who, as a species, spend their whole life underground. These creatures generally have Infra Vision as their main vision and suffer attack or similar penalties in daylight or have an infra-visual range of greater than 60 feet. Creatures with enhanced infra-vision can see clearly enough to identify species and individuals.

Some sages believe that those creatures with limited or normal infra-vision have less box receptors in their eyes and therefore cannot see such a clear picture. This makes some degree of sense as the converse could also be true: - orcs etc. have less normal cone receptors in their eyes and therefore suffer a penalty in day light?

Infra-vision works inside or out but is the most sensitive form of vision and is overwhelmed by any other type of vision.
