Rolf, Elsbeth and Callum approach the nest and eventually look into it, whilst Edgar perches on a rafter, also looking into the nest. The baby things in the nest turn towards Rolf and squeal louder.

Those downstairs hang around discussing Zhiri's gen, and generally trying to make sure that nothing jumps them.

Yes!

Zhiri

Zhiri looks delighted that Peter knows what she's talking about.
"Yes somewhat, although their relationship with their forming element is somewhat complex. I think they are a more refined version of genies and elementals." She looks at Ishar fondly.

At the squawking noise, she looks anxiously towards the stairs but forebears to move until called for.

Unsure

Elsbeth

"Elsbeth, this is more your field. What do you recommend?"

The druid looks at the creatures, clearly fascinated, repulsed and curious- all at once. She thinks a moment, then shakes her head.

"I'm not sure," she tells Rolf. "They are bein' too tiny to yet be evil, and yet we be knowin' what they will grow into. But... they're mother could have been just defending them, despite what she did to us."

Clearly, she's divided in her idea of what to do.

"We could kill them, feed them or leave them," she adds.

Decision time

Rolf

Hearing Elsbeth's uncertainty, Rolf sighs, his hopes that she'd find a clear path having been dashed. To leave them seems more cruel to him than anything, letting them slowly starve to death and having to listen to their squawking. To feed them would mean to stop on their mission and hunt suitable food, and once they accepted that yoke, it would only require that they continues until the beasts could fend for themselves, and become a hazard to face later. Distasteful as it may seem, only one option seemed wise....

He looks at Callum and arches an eyebrow and shrugs. Taking a deep breath, he lets it out slowly. "Elsbeth, why don't you go back down stairs. Tell Kerim we've got more doors we need to open.

Assuming that she will do as he suggests, he turns his attention back to the nest, readying his sword.

Right Decision

Callum mac Aonghas

Callum waits until Elspeth has retreated down the stairs (assuming she goes).

"Aye, well Rolf" says Callum, "I'm after thinking that his Lordship back ashore yonder wouldna be awfy happy about these craiturs singin' to him, and I wouldna leave even a doghead to starve. Will we be getting it over with, then?"

He reaches over and, careful to avoid bites and claws, starts wringing the necks of the monsters.

What's happening?

Madelyn

** EDITED May 9, 2001, 1:43 pm **

As the squawking gets louder from upstairs, Madelyn leaves her position at the bottom of the stairs and moves out to the main hall, where she can see the ledge above.

Her stomach churns in concern not only for Rolf, but for Elsbeth’s safety, and she fights the urge to go running up the stairs and assist, after all, Rolf told her to stay down here. She hears snippets of conversation, but is unable to make out what is being said or done, but does not take her eyes away from the broken masonry above.

Without a solution

Elsbeth

Elsbeth hesitates a long moment, looking at the creatures- for she must call them that. She swallows hard, then nods at Rolf's comments.

"Aye. I'll...go and be finding Kerim for ye." She turns and walks to the stairs, not looking back.

Blood will out

Edgar

Edgar nods slowly, agreeing with Rolf's decision, however unpalatable it might be.

"Birds of a feather ..." he whispers, to himself as he bows his head sadly, though he continues to watch and bear witness - for he cannot abrogate his own responsibility, e'en if his is not the hand that closes around the fledgling's necks ...

a decision ....

Elsbeth heads back down stairs to find Kerim, and Callum moves to deal with the Bird-Woman's off spring.

The nest is large enough that he has to climb into it, before he can get to them. As he does so, he finds the nest surpsingly stable, but then it did have to hold the mother with comfort.

As he approaches then the noise increases and they start snapping at each other and then at Callum as he aproaches them, much like chicks that think they are going to get fed. These, however seem to have fully formed and needle sharp, but small, teeth.

Callum manages to break the neck of the first, but both of the other two manage to get a nip in on him as he deals with them

[ OOC 2 points of damages for Callum ]

Those down stairs hear the noise level increase and then decrease in stages, until it is all quiet upstairs ....

A Gristly Affair

Rolf

Not intending to saddle Callum with the whole of the gristly duty, Rolf hoists himself into the nest. He watches in surprise as Callum strangles on bare handed. Seeing the other two nipping at him, Rolf steps forward and brings his sword down on the one to the right, making sure that his stroke does not imperil Callum. "Best be done quickly." he mutters.

Thoughts soaring

Edgar

Edgar watches until the last of the fledglings is no more, then bows his head, perhaps in silent prayer, though the raven is yet new to thoughts of gods and such.

On impulse, he suddenly raises his eyes to the skies above, clearly visible through the gaping hole in the roof, and for a moment his wing muscles twitch, urging him to soar away ...

But he remains, though he continues to look towards the heavens for a time.
