81 The Kitchens

johnb (Admin)

After Ravn's attempt to kick the door in and his subsequent dance around the edge of the rubbish pile, any chance of surprise, if you had any, is now gone. Callum, on the other hand, kicks the door with the greatest of easy and soon you stand there in a newer smaller pile of rubbish and debris of your own making.

It is gloomy in these rooms, but you realise that there is a little light seeping in around the shutters of some small windows set fairly high in the kithen walls. There is enough light to move about with, but not enough to explore with.

As you move forwards you find a small store room on the left hand side as you leave the large room. There is debris all over the place, Bits of broken barrel and few empty wine bottles flagons of different types and styles., clearly it was once a wine and beer store. There are clearly wine racks an space for barrels, indeed there are a few clearly empty and broached barrels visible. Who knows what you might find under the debris.

To the right is a kitchen. There is a long wood burning stove, a large open fire place (no sign of heat from either and the ashes are old and cold) tables, pots, pans, cooking implements. A couple of chairs and shelves with various jars and bottles on. The jars and bottles are marked with symbolic labels showing pictures of the contents. Some are fairly obvious, some it needs the combination of Peter's cooking and plant knowledge to interpret and yet others elude even Peter completely. The kitchen is fairly clear of debris and many of the items and jars appear whole and unbroken.

Past the kitchen, there is an entrance hall. There are pegs against the wall, presumably for hanging cloaks and coats and a table with two benches. These are pushed roughly to one side, but are not seriously damaged - a few scratch marks and the odd blade mark are all. There is room here for storing more barrels and crates, and indeed there are the signs here that one or two crates have been smashed open and the contents taken. There are another four exits from the entrance hall.

There is an external door, presumably the one the Rolf wanted to enter in the first place. It is closed and locked.

There is an entrance to another storage room. Here there is a pile of empty sacks, mixed with bits of broken wood and pottery on the floor, up against one wall. There are shelves that clearly held sacks, jars and small crates.

There is a closed and locked door, to the side of the store room. This door shows signs of an attempted forcing, but still remains fairly solid. It has a huge brass handle, set into it with a key hole under it.

And finally:- There is a set of stairs leading up wards. There is a little light at the top of the stairs but not enough to see anything up there.

the next step

Rolf

"Perhaps," Rolf says by way of answering Elsbeth's question. "Let us see what there is to see before we decide anything." Moving on into the kitchen, Rolf sighs as he sees the stairs. Well, if it must be done, best be done quickly. "Anyone have some light? We'll see what's at the top of the stairs and figure out what needs be done." He looks to the others, "I'm not sure about the stairs though, or the ceiling. It'd probably be best to only have a couple of us go up. I think Callum, Elsbeth and I will move ahead." Rolf shoulders the bow and draws his huge sword and hand axe. "Madelyn, if you'll handle things here..."

Watching

Edgar

Edgar remains silent, the tension within him heightening his alertness as he strains to see or hear anything out of the ordinary.

Straggler

Yuri

Detecting he is not needed at the moment, nor is there room for everyone in the kitchen, Yuri lags behind in the first room, taking the opportunity to investigate the room more thoroughly.

Scavenging...

Ravn Ashengrey

Ravn, somewhat angry at himself for making such a poor figure at kicking in the door, is further frustrated as Rolf does not select him for the upstairs search party. Well, that's the Constable's privilege, he tells himself, and decides to pass time by poking through the shattered remains of the kitchen with his spear for clues to the buldings' former occupants.

CAAAWK!

Uddhugg

The one-eyed crow lands on Ravn's shoulder with a caw, pecks him on the side of his helmet with a hollow metallic sound, and nods its beak in the direction of the other adventurers gathered in what remains of the main hallway.

Pottery shards

Ravn Ashengrey

Ravn stops poking around in the kitchen when the crow bangs his helmet and looks up to catch the sight of one of his companions, one he has not paid much notice to before. The cook, indeed..? Ravn decides to ask him for his opinion.
"So you are Peter, are you not? I am Ravn Ashengrey, people call me Stormcrow, but just call me Ravn. Nice to meet you."
With a friendly smile, he stretches out his hand in greeting.
"Say, Peter, I hear you are a fair hand with pots and pans. Could you possibly tell from these kitchen utensils what kind of people used to live here? Man or demihuman? Vegetarian or omnivorous? Highly skilled or primitive? Or whatever..?"

Following orders

Elsbeth

Elsbeth nods, moving forward with Rolf. She draws her weapon and motions Laddie back. "I was knowing you were a wise lad," she whispers. "We know not what we shall see."

On guard

Madelyn

Madelyn finishes her prayer, and shrugs her shoulders, she stifles a laugh at Ravn’s attempt to open the door and winks at Elsbeth, that will serve him right for treating her friend as he did outside she thinks to herself.

As the party move into the new rooms, she brings up the rear, and standing in the doorway, with a quick look to the outer door behind her to check they aren’t being followed, her attention is returned to the kitchens.

"Madelyn, if you'll handle things here..."

Madelyn smiles at Rolf, and nods, as the group head up the stairs.

Looking for light

Kerim Alakani

Sincerest and extended apologies everyone, my whole family has been for the last week afflicted by a dreadful sickness the like of which I have not suffered for many a year now. Only now is it that I am recovered enough to sit in front of my computer. Many apologies.

Kerim, examining things and finding little of value, decides that no matter what or who lived here they must have had need for light, otherwise why would they have windows. He searches around for candles, a lantern etc, something to light. Though while he is about this activity he is sure to keep his laquered leather cutlass ready.

Not standing around here

Mandrake

Mandrake has no wish to stand around whilst the others dispatch the nestlings, and isn't sure that the ceiling/floor above will hold the weight of those who just ascended, so he heads back out towards the locked door and has a look for traps and at the chances of opening it.

(OOC: success for finding the traps, though I'm sure that any would have been set off by previous attempts at forcing it. Not so lucky on the open locks though.)

yep ....

Peter Gasgano

Gazing around the room, Peter responds to the Norse Cleric, grinning.

"Oh Yes, Ravn. The people who lived here were mainly Human, although there were a few demi-human inhabitants. They were also omnivorous, and imported many food stuffs. ... Oh and they were primarily followers of the Norse gods."

He finishes emphatically.

What happens if I press this ?

Edgar

Since any decision as to the nestlings fate has been put off for the nonce, Edgar is only too happy when Mandrake turns aside to other matters, and he becomes almost enthusiastic in his assistance of the gnome as he searches for traps and the like, though it is clear that the raven has little idea of what to look for.

Careful!

Ravn Ashengrey

Ravn listens with interest to Peter's brief reckoning of the buildings' former inhabitants.
"Well, then it would seem we are only reclaiming property from invading monsters, would it not? I thank you for your wisdom."
Hearing the stairway creaking dangerously as Rolf, Elspeth and the heavy Callum ascend, the rune caster withdraws from the kitchen into the hallway, pulling Peter with him and issuing a warning.
"Careful, my friends, it sounds like the loft is less durable in places. Mind where you step, up there!"
