67 The Approach

By JohnB

Rolf and Mandrake draw near to the gate on the patched structure, and Rolf asks quietly if Mandrake can understand the language being spoken.

Mandrake listens quietly for a second, but the voices are quiet at this distance as if the are just talking normally. Mandrake knows that he has heard the language before but he does not speak it, it reminds him of the language that the dogheads used when they were speaking in their own tongue.

The rest of you wait, wary and alert.

More trouble?

By Sharon
who plays Madelyn

Madelyn fidgets impatiently a back of Keldon, watching the space that Rolf and Mandrake disappeared into the brush.

Turning to Elsbeth she comments, "I hope it is not more trouble!"

Surprised

By lechrist
who plays Elsbeth

Elsbeth looks over, startled at Madelyn's words, as if she hadn't been expecting anyone to address her. "Trouble does seem to follow us, doesn't it?" the younger woman exclaims. "I'd hope so too. But Rolf's in charge, so its up to him whether we be following or not." She sighs. "It would be nice if it was just peaceful folk wouldn't it?"

Trouble?

who plays Madelyn

"Trouble does seem to follow us, doesn't it?"

"It definitely does", Madelyn agrees.

"It would be nice if it was just peaceful folk wouldn't it?"

"Let’s hope so!" Madelyn looks to the brush again, "I wish they would hurry!"

A better door than a window

By Skald
who plays Edgar

Edgar clutches Yuri's sleeve with his talons, though he manages not to pierce the flesh beneath, as he leans out trying to see around Callum.

Noticing

By lechrist
who plays Elsbeth

Elsbeth looks long at Madelyn, biting her lip. She sees the concern on the other woman's face, the slight worry in her eyes. She blushes as she realizes she is staring.

Taking a deep breath, the Druid keeps her attention from the exploration ahead and forces herself to speak. "You... you care for Rolf, don't you?" she asks Madelyn hesitantly.

Hail, the wall

By Brad
who plays Rolf

Rolf speaks quietly to Mandrake, "Stay behind me. If things turn violent, I want you to rejoin the others. I'll cover your escape as best I might." Stepping in front of Mandrake, Rolf calls out, "Hail, the wall."

Hailing the Wall

By JohnB

At Rolf's shout the voices inside the wall change in timbre and tempo, the normal noises stop and there is a commotion as if a number of people are suddenly rushing about.

Then a large humanish head appears over the top of the gate. It has long browny red hair, a thick beard of the same colour and a large hooked nose. The gate looks about 10 feet tall, so it must be 12 or so feet tall to see over the gate like that ...

It looks out at Rolf, with Mandrake standing behind him, and suddenly raises a large mace or club above its head and bellows "Gert Orf Moy Land!!"

Why is life so confusing?

By Sharon
who plays Madelyn

"You... you care for Rolf, don't you?"

As Elsbeth addresses Madelyn, she takes her eyes off the brush and turns back to the young woman beside her. "I do care about him, yes" she replies and blushing slightly she quietly adds, "but I care for you a great deal too Elsbeth". She peers deeply into Elsbeth’s eyes, as if in search of some answers, before returning her attention back to the brush before adding as an afterthought, "Why does life have to be so confusing?"

Apologies

By Brad
who plays Rolf

Quietly, Rolf speaks to Mandrake without pulling his eyes from the gate, "It speaks our tongue, remove yourself to a place of safety." Turning his attention back to the wall, he calls out, "My apologies." He pauses, "May I have your name and know the extent of your borders so I can tell others to avoid your land as well?"

Confusing indeed

By lechrist
who plays Elsbeth

"But I care for you a great deal too Elsbeth," says Madelyn, looking deep into Elsbeth's eyes.

The younger woman meets her gaze and slowly turns a bright red. She lowers her eyes, licking her lips. "And I you, Madelyn," she whispers. At the other woman's further comment, Elsbeth only nods, fully in agreement.

bandits

By JohnB

"It be moy land from the main parth to the warter and fer ten moiles on each soide. I bin hearin of ye and yer bandits, und I want not yer lot around here. Now, Gert Orf Moy Land!!"

Responds the head stuck over the wall, still waving a huge clubmace about.

Now you see me, now you don't

By Skald
who plays Edgar

Having seen quite enough, Edgar leans back, nestling closer to Yuri, and trusting that Callum's mighty frame will conceal him from the sight of the huge two-legs.

OOC: yeah right - like some giants gonna be REALLY interested in a scrawny bird ! ;

Distracted ...

By Ian
who plays Peter

Peter, who had been idly scanning the surrounding country side for unusual or interesting plants, jumps as the deep voice rings out from the fortification. "What the..." he mutters in surprise

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

By malc
who plays Callum

Callum swings his sword up so as the blade is resting on his shoulder and is poised on the balls of his feet to rush forward to Rolf's aid if necessary.

OOC: If we don't get orf his land, will his son Jethro come out and shoot Laddie because "He'm were worryin' moi sheep"?

Impolite

By Kerim
who plays Kerim

Kerim pats his mount comfortingly, commenting to no-one in particular, a slight tone of accusation "One would expect not a creature so large to dwell in such small confines. As sure as the wind blows a sore neck it must have for sure to live within it's walls. Wonder I too how it knows of us so well where our feet never have trod"

He leaves the aspertions hanging in the air for others to draw their own conclusions, yet making it clear his opinion at this odd occurance.

He looks up from scratching between his beast ears before dismounting. "Best I lead the animals before such can frighten them so, too valuable are they to lose."

Ain't wanted here abouts

By Brad
who plays Rolf

Rolf backs off slowly, keeping close eye on the massive weapon swinging about. "Good sir, we are not bandits and seek only peaceful relations, but we will not intrude on you and leave in peace. My thanks for your patience." Rolf makes his way carefully back to the others.

"Did you hear? I see no reason to impose on yon creature though I would like to know more of him. Still, I suppose there's no help for it. Let us continue on towards our meeting." He hitches up his shoulder bag and takes a second to regain his bearings.

Considering the options...

By Joe
who plays Herloch

Herloch witnesses the largish humanoid command Rolf and his company to leave.

As Rolf is returning, he approaches Elsbeth and Madelyn and says, "This looks like a time when perhaps straight on combat isn't the best idea. I understand you might find it hard to believe that I could say that, but a priest of Thor knows when not to fight. Elsbeth, you grew up near here. Is it possible to skirt this fellow's territory and still make it to our destination on time?"

The others may seem shocked at Herloch's tongue. He is both cordial and respectful, almost as if he's really trying to be.

"Perhaps we can ask them to escort us through their land?"

The final suggestion he says under his breath, "Maybe we should bribe them."

Careful!

By jase
who plays Yuri

Yuri breathes a sigh of relief as Mandrake comes back safe and sound as it causes Edgar to ease up his grip on his shoulder. "You've gotta learn to relax", Yuri mutters under his breath, a small smile playing upon his lips.

After Rolf speaks Yuri takes his turn. "Ten miles? You can't want us to walk around? After all, we're right in the middle of his property now, we might as well continue on."

Passers by

By Kerim
who plays Kerim

Musing for a short while Kerim suggests "By his own words In his land we are indeed Yuri, yet attack us yet he has not."

Kerim waggles his finger "Obvious it is that his safety lies in yonder fortress, the state of which support claim of attack, indeed not many days past."

He moves to look at the fortress "A bargain I sense is to be had by winning their favour."

Kerim turns around to the party with a broad smile of a salesman "Learnt I have that the easy journey yields few treasures for many others have travelled it's path. Our risk would guarentee our favour...and earn reputation."

Kerim lets the thoughts sink in, and whilst he doesn't precisely say exactly what it is he is suggesting it is plain that he is talking of solving the bandit problem for preferential trade, and perhaps a gift or two.

"A risk there is by any route through this land that we shall meet the bandits...unprepared." he adds, nodding his head slightly. From the corner of his eye he looks at Edgar.

A safe return

By Sharon
who plays Madelyn

Madelyn’s eyebrows rise at Herloch’s comments, is this the same man that seems to want to pick a fight with just about anything, she thinks.

Herloch’s comments aside, Madelyn relaxes in the saddle, and a sigh of relief is released from her lips as Rolf appears from the brush that she has watched so closely since his departure. what is it that I am feeling for this man she thinks to herself, but manages a smile as he approaches.
