The Swamp

The Swamp that stretches from the along the Galinia Coast nearly as far as Dincaoc and completely cutting off Mistaton is a miserable place.

As you approach, you first notice the ground getting damper and that less of the Scrubland plants and bushes grow here, and the next thing you know the bushes and trees of the scrub have been completely replaced by the bright green Grasses and Reeds of a swamp. At this point the ground is still fairly firm but there are large areas of standing water - the wild life changes as well. There are now Frogs and Toads and the occasional Water Rat and Vole, there are still Seagulls galore but you are now likely to hear the song of the Reed Warbler, The Shoveler Duck and Red Shank.

Still further in the ground becomes 'sticky' and anyone stepping on to it is likely to be held fast, although this shortly gives over to what appears to be shallow water atop the sticky mud. The Gods help anyone who wades in here, for without the skills of the swamp or the Blessings of the Gods they shall surely be sucked to their death. There is one path that leads through, which is raised on wood and stones and is maintained by the Gila. From this path one can see what appear to be islands or hillocks of firmer ground deep in the swamp, with scrub bushes and trees growing on them. Indeed I understand that the Gila live on one such island deep within the mire but close to the path that they maintain.

Here the reeds still grow along the sides of the path and around the islands and you can still hear the cry of the Gulls, Reed Warbler and Shovelor. There are reputed to be large poisonous Water Snakes and Huge Lizards deep within the swamp, but I have only seen Crocodiles, Frogs and Toads on my travels. They tell me that fishing in the waters of the swamp can catch a haul of Tench - a dirty brown fish of about 10 to 15 inches in and mediocre taste. Personally I would also be concerned for the leeches and Scama Fish that live in the waters as well.
