Education and Information

After considering my own piecemeal education I recently became interested in where one could attain a formal education. My research led to some interesting findings, I was surprised to find so many establishments offering training in the Norse Religions, I suppose that may explain the explain the fast rise of we Norsemen in this glorious land of opportunity. I also discovered there were a number of libraries where one could go to extend knowledge. They all charge a fee, of course, but who would expect differently in this modern world.

The are still many wise men who will train individual students, much like my own education, and I understand that the Gnomes of Rockhome and Deepdelve both offer arcane training to their kin, so my list is not complete. However, I have listed those places that I know and have even listed them by type of knowledge at the bottom of this scroll.

The Holy Isle

The biggest and best place to get an education in the whole of the Hann region has to be the Holy Isle itself. Under the rule of Oliver, Lord Barroli and Raven King of Armes, it provides a range of opportunities for the student. It has the best library in region and has complete heraldic information about every coat of armes and title bestowed in the region going back for hundreds of years. It also has major sections on the History, Laws and Customs of the Hann region and the Plants of the region. While smaller, it also has sections covering the Wildlife of the region, Astrology, Arcane Spell Use and information about the Other Civilised Humanoids of the region. It is also the centre for Druidic education in the region and major Linguistic centre as the Master and their apprentices speak suck a range of languages between them.

There are teachers here who will accept students of the Druidic faith, as well as trainee Heralds, Mages and Sages. The Holy Isle charges a fee for studying there, but there are bursaries for those students who show potential and who's family do not have the wherewithal to fund their studies. It has become fashionable for the children of the wealthier families in The Strongholds to spend a few months here finishing their education.

For those visitors who just want information rather than education the Masters and Students will search the libraries and discourse on the subjects of their speciality for a small fee.

Bime

There are two learned institutions in Bime, The Library and the Academy.

The Library, or the Hall of Learning as its likes to be called, specialises in the History of the Great Lake States and The Zacharan invasion but also has section on Folk Lore, and Legend as well as Local Law and a collection of Music and Songs of the region. It is not as well equipped as some other libraries and some of the scrolls and tomes are of low quality, but I am told it is well worth a visit. Originally funded by the Zacharan invaders, the library now receives a little funding from the city of Bime but mainly funds itself. For a small fee - students are welcome to browse the library, under the observation of the librarians, or the librarians will find information for you.

The Academy is a small private magic school owned and run by Megbar the Magnificent. He and his assistants will take apprentices, for a fee. The apprentices are schooled in Midani and learn the Zacharan style of spell casting.

Jekleal

The Conservatory in Jekleal is a strange place; they run a hospital and medical centre and manage some miraculous recoveries - all without the aid of any recognised religious order. It is said that they teach an obscure branch or arcane lore, but not one that is recognised or known by either of the other two schools. They will take apprentices, with out a fee, who show 'aptitude' - but no one quite seems to understand the tests that they take. However, their graduates certainly have healing abilities and often exhibit other skills that seem magical in nature.

The Order of the Great Saga is a Norse military/religious order, who's mother chapter is based at the Collegiate Temple in the town. Candidates are taught the religious tenets of the Norse faith and are also schooled in the arts of war. Candidates must prove their devotion to the Norse faith and undergo long and arduous training. Their families are also expected to show proper piety and often make large donations to the church to prove this point. The Order of the Great saga is recognised by The Raven King of Armes as a knightly order and candidates can achieve squireachy or knighthood though its auspices.

The collegiate temple will also take non military candidates and train them for the priesthood.

Sybarite

The Norse temple in Sybarite accepts candidates for priestly orders and it is but a short journey to The Tower of the Heavens.

The Tower of the Heavens is a monastery-like centre for study of Astronomy, Divination and other Sciences. The sages of the Tower will either read your future or act as a consultant in their specialist areas for a fee. The Tower of the Heavens is also served by the Order of the Night Sky, which teaches its members personal disciplines reputed to be imported from Kara Tur. However, this is not a favoured path for many, as the order is reputed to brainwash their candidates into placing the Order above their family and other commitments. The Order of the Night Sky is not recognised as Chivalric by the Raven King of Armes.

Tas Daan

Tas Dann in The StrongHolds holds a Norse monastery, which is home to Brospar Candlecup, leader of the Norse religion in the Hann region, it is also home to a chapter of the Order the Great Saga. Tas Dann takes candidates for both the military and priestly orders.

Irilian

The Abbie of the Sisters of Forgiefanas houses a library dealing with herbalism and healing. The sisters also run an infirmary and madhouse on the site. They are unusual in that they are one of the few houses that follow the Finish tenets of faith.

The Norse temple in Irilian is by far the largest in the Hann region and takes Candidates for the priestly order.

The Guild of Venteners in Irilian claims to be able to arrange introductions to trainers in many skill areas, they charge members a small percentage of the trainers fee. They will arrange similar services for 'guests', but for a much higher percentage.

Angasa

The Norse temple on Angasa houses a chapter of the Order of the Great Saga and

Galinia

There is a chapter of the Order of the Great Saga at Branna's, which takes both priestly and military candidates.

Lower Smokey

The great sage Finnal mac Cumhal lives on the Old Smokey mountain and will occasionally help peopole with information about Astronomy, Weather or Mathematics. He also has an interest in unusual and supernatural happenings. Be warned though, he is a tetchy old man will demand a magical item as payment before he will consider helping you

Razadi

The Norse temple in Razadi houses a chapter of the Order of the Great Saga and takes both priestly and military candidates.
